Job Summary:The City of Largo is seeking a detail-oriented Mechanical Inspector to ensure mechanical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings meet all applicable codes and standards. This technical role involves both office and field work, reviewing installations for compliance with mechanical design, HVAC systems, and related components during all phases of construction or renovation.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct inspections of mechanical systems, including HVAC, ventilation, and related installations

Ensure compliance with Florida Building Code and local mechanical regulations

Review plans, permits, and onsite work for proper installation and safety

Communicate with contractors, engineers, and property owners to resolve discrepancies

Document findings and assist in enforcement actions as necessary

Work independently under the general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector

A mechanically skilled professional with a strong understanding of mechanical codes, construction practices, and a commitment to public safety. Must be able to work independently in the field and provide clear, accurate reporting.

• Meets with contractors to discuss matters related to the buildings

• Informs individuals about specific code requirements and answers code-specific questions

• Responsible for the quality control of construction projects for adherence to approved plans and specifications

• Provides information to the public regarding construction projects

• Responsible for Florida Building Code violations

• Provides information to the public regarding violations of City, County, and State codes and solutions to correct or remove the code violations

• Performs tasks such as data entry and responding to customer questions

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

• Four (4) years of experience in building construction trades, construction and architecture inspections, or civil engineering

• Based on current state law, education (in architecture, engineering, or a construction-related field only) can be substituted for experience for up to three (3) years

• Standard Inspector (Building, Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing) License required or the ability to qualify for and obtain a provisional (Building, Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing) state license within the time period allotted by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation

• Must obtain the Standard Inspector (Building, Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing) License prior to expiration of the Provisional License

• Based on department need, a particular license may be required when filling a vacancy, but specifics will be clearly outlined on the posting

• Valid Florida Driver's License or from another state for transfer within 30 days of hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of construction terminology, techniques, and procedures, including the ability to read and understand complex construction documents and plans

• Ability to meet and deal with the general public in a tactful and effective manner

• Ability to follow through on findings of irregularities to comply with approved standards

• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing

• Considerable knowledge of Florida laws, City ordinances, rules and regulations, and principles and practices of inspection techniques

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 5% inside a climate-controlled building and 95% outside, which includes driving.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately two (2) hours per day, and walking approximately four (4) hours per day. The job also requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, fine manipulations, grasping, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting objects weighing up to 15 pounds; occasional kneeling, pulling, pushing, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 44 pounds. On rare occasions, the work requires crawling and lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 45 pounds.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to understand what others are saying in normal conversation and on the telephone. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others and speak effectively on the phone. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle, and read normal and fine print.

Driving Requirements: Requires occasional driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software. It also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, internet applications, and database management.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with ladders, tape measures, fall protection equipment, and shears.
