Description
We seek a passionate and innovative Elementary Computer Science Teacher to provide foundational instruction in computer science, digital literacy, and computational thinking for students in grades K–5. The teacher will collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate computer science concepts into core subjects and foster student creativity, critical thinking, and responsible digital citizenship in alignment with Hawaii DOE’s standards and initiatives.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop engaging computer science instruction based on Hawaii Content & Performance Standards (HCPS III), Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) standards, and ISTE student standards. Introduce students to coding, algorithmic thinking, basic robotics, and safe, ethical technology use. To promote inquiry and innovation, utilize project-based learning and age-appropriate tools such as Scratch, Code.org, Bee-Bots, and micro: bits. Collaborate with grade-level teams to integrate technology across the curriculum. Maintain an inclusive, student-centered learning environment that supports diverse learners. Teach digital citizenship and internet safety in accordance with HIDOE’s technology and student privacy policies. Assess and monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on data and student needs. Manage classroom devices, support technology use, and assist with basic troubleshooting. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and families regarding technology use and learning goals. Participate in schoolwide professional development, PLCs, and technology integration initiatives. Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Computer Science, or a related field. Hawaii State Teacher License or eligibility to obtain one. Knowledge of computer science education standards and child development. Preferred: Experience teaching or integrating computer science at the elementary level. Familiarity with digital tools such as Google Workspace, Seesaw, Scratch, or robotics kits. Strong classroom management and instructional differentiation skills. Commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive education practices. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a classroom and computer lab environment. This may involve lifting some equipment and technology devices. Interaction with students, staff, families, and technology support personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.
If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Payday
New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
