Position: Environmental Technician Natural Resources Grant Funded
Hiring Range: $17.16-$22.11 Commensurate with Verified Qualifications

SUMMARY
This position will assist environmental specialists and biologists with monitoring of water quality, air quality, radon, and brownfields on reservation and in the 1836 Ceded Territories. This position may also assist other Natural Resources Department programs as needed. This position includes extensive fieldwork, quality assurance and data management duties.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Necessary Qualifications
An Associate Degree in Environmental Sciences or related field of study; and
One (1) year specific field experience in water quality, air quality, or brownfields.
Experience operating and trailering watercraft; and
Proficiency and demonstrable computer skills with MS Office applications, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; and
Experience using GPS for navigation and mobile GIS applications; and
Strong verbal communication, written communication, organizational, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; and
Heightened attention to detail/accuracy and strong commitment to confidentiality; and
A valid Michigan Operators License with the ability to be insured under Tribes policy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and organizes environmental sampling equipment for surveys.
Assists or leads field surveys including electro-fishing, water quality sampling, air monitoring, and brownfields assessments.
Maintains, fabricates, and repairs environmental sampling equipment.
Summarizes and enters environmental survey and research data into computer files.
Operates and maintains company vehicles or watercraft.
Works cooperatively with other Tribal departments on various projects.
Assists Tribal Members in accessing services and may participate in community programs and educational services offered by department.
All other position/department related duties as assigned by supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequent and long periods of wading in chest deep water in variable currents (some quick) and light conditions. Additionally, frequent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, kneeling, or stretching is to be expected. The nature of the work also involves manual dexterity to operate office equipment as well as environmental sampling equipment. An employee will need normal or corrected to normal range of sight and hearing and will occasionally carry work-related materials up to fifty (50) pounds.
The use of personal protective equipment is necessary in this position. Such equipment may include lineman gloves, masks, sunglasses or other eyewear, work boots, sunscreen, insect spray, protective or insulated clothing/coverings, and Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs).
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a variety of physical environments such as within a climate-controlled environment aboard watercraft, wading in rivers or lakes, and in all types of weather (hot, cold, humid, dry, snow, rain, ice, wind). The employees work schedule will need to be flexible and adjusted according to survey needs, whereas some occur in the evening and overnight hours. The employee must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations while remaining focused and professional, as well as be able to deal with difficult people without losing perspective. Occasional overnight or local travel will be necessary for surveys needs and to attend meetings or trainings.
