Job Description

The Applications Engineer will provide technical support to customers engaged in the splicing of optical fiber as well as production of optical components utilized in medical, industrial, aerospace, and defense applications utilizing Fujikura splicers and accessories. Support includes optical fiber splicing, troubleshooting splicer equipment, and production of fiber lenses, bundles, combiners, etc. Duties will include travel to customer locations to perform hands-on training, white paper and video creation, and customer relationship development through traveling both independently and with the sales team.

Responsibilities

Determine proper splicer settings to fuse optical fibers based on their structure and chemistries to achieve lowest possible loss.

Provide pre - and post - technical support to sales, customer service representatives, and customers.

Produce optical components such as ball lenses, end caps, tapers, bundles, and combiners utilizing AFL and Fujikura splicing equipment.

Conduct product training both internally for company associates and externally for customers, sales agents and representatives.

Create documents for new product introductions, installation instructions, application notes and product specification guidelines.

Remain up to date and knowledgeable in optical fiber engineering, photonics, and current competitor product offerings and technology.

Travel to customer locations for onsite support.

Investigate and troubleshoot products for customer complaints.

Adhere to and promote the environmental, health and safety policies of AFL.

Produce white papers featuring AFL products and present research at trade shows.

Data analysis and interpretation.

Problem solving and root cause analysis.

Qualifications

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in mechanical, materials, optical, or electrical engineering, or physics.

Entry to mid-level up to 5 years of experience in an optical fiber manufacturing or R&D environment.

Optical fiber and photonics knowledge and experience a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Project management experience.

Excellent communication skills – technical writing, commercial writing, and public speaking.

Coding and software macro generation skills a plus.

Mechanical aptitude.

SolidWorks/CAD experience a plus.

Ability to travel up to 50%.
