Work-in-Progress (WIP) Accounting at Logic Integration
What is WIP Accounting? Work-in-progress (WIP) accounting is a practice of tracking project costs and revenues throughout the life of a project, rather than waiting until the project is finished (Work in Progress (WIP) Accounting: What Is It and Why Is It Important? Procore). It involves maintaining a WIP report (or schedule) that offers an overview of the costs incurred and revenue earned for each project during a given period, providing a snapshot of ongoing work against the budget (Work in Progress (WIP) Accounting: What Is It and Why Is It Important? Procore). At Logic Integration, we use WIP accounting for all our projects - we continuously update WIP schedules to monitor project financial health in real time and ensure our books reflect the actual status of each job.
Why WIP Accounting is Important: WIP accounting is essential to our business because it ensures accurate financial reporting and helps keep projects on track. By aligning revenue recognition with project progress (using a percentage-of-completion approach), WIP accounting allows us to recognize revenue as work is completed (Work in Progress (WIP) Accounting: What Is It and Why Is It Important? Procore) rather than only at project completion - this gives management and stakeholders a more accurate picture of earned revenue and company performance during long-term projects. WIP reports also provide early warnings for potential issues: they offer insight into actual costs versus budget, helping identify cost overruns or other variances early so we can take corrective action to keep projects within budget (Work in Progress (WIP) Accounting: What Is It and Why Is It Important? Procore). In short, our Controller will own the WIP accounting process - updating and analyzing WIP reports and ensuring that the information is used to maintain financial accuracy, drive project profitability, and support sound decision-making across the company.
