Summary:

The Professional Custodian plays a key role in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that supports student learning, staff productivity, and community pride. This position involves performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks across school buildings, including classrooms, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and common areas. Custodians are also responsible for operating janitorial equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, and burnishers, and will assist with periodic floor care including stripping, waxing, and carpet extracting. Training will be provided, but attention to detail, reliability, and a strong work ethic are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities:

Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and other common areas to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.

Sweep, mop, vacuum, and disinfect high-touch surfaces using industry best practices and safety standards.

Execute routine and specialized floor care tasks, including stripping, waxing, scrubbing, and burnishing hard floors, as well as carpet extraction and spot treatment (training provided).

Operate and maintain janitorial equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, side-by-side/swing machines, carpet extractors, and power washers (training provided).

Empty and reline trash and recycling receptacles in all designated areas; maintain cleanliness and odor control.

Clean and maintain glass surfaces, including windows, mirrors, and entryways for a polished, professional appearance.

Dust and wipe down surfaces including desks, fixtures, furniture, and classroom equipment.

Support the setup and breakdown of furniture and equipment for school events, meetings, and special activities.

Monitor and restock cleaning supplies and chemicals; notify leadership when inventory is low or equipment maintenance is required.

Secure assigned buildings and rooms by locking doors and windows as needed during and after shifts.

Follow all safety protocols and proper chemical handling procedures in compliance with district and company policies.

Report any facility maintenance issues, safety hazards, or security concerns to the Site Manager/Supervisor or Facilities Manager promptly.

Maintain seasonal exterior upkeep of entrances and walkways, such as snow shoveling or litter pickup as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall cleanliness, appearance, and function of school buildings and grounds.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

1-4 years of experience in janitorial or custodial work, ideally in a school or similar facility.

Floor care experience (stripping, waxing, burnishing, carpet extraction, etc.) is strongly preferred, but not required - training will be provided for qualified candidates.

Familiarity with cleaning procedures, tools, and equipment including auto scrubbers, swing machines, and extractors (training provided).

Ability to perform seasonal exterior tasks such as snow removal, leaf cleanup, and light grounds maintenance.

Strong attention to detail and pride in delivering high-quality results.

Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work well independently or within a team.

Must be punctual, reliable, and maintain a professional appearance and attitude.

Must pass a background check in accordance with school district requirements.

Physical Demands:

Sustained periods of standing, sitting, walking and kneeling

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
