Job Description
Senior Controls & Automation Engineer Build the World's First Autonomous Drilling Rig!
Opportunity Summary
We're at the forefront of a major transformation in resource extraction, building the first autonomous drilling systems designed specifically for critical mineral exploration. These next-generation platforms will operate with precision, speed, and safety, far surpassing what legacy equipment can deliver. As a Senior Controls & Automation Engineer, you'll lead the design and implementation of advanced control systems that automate field operations, integrate real-time sensing, and unlock autonomy in one of the worlds oldest and most valuable industries. This is a rare opportunity to join at the ground level with a well-funded pre-seed to build intelligent machines operating in some of Earth's harshest environments. Youll be hands-on in both the lab and field, developing mission-critical control software and hardware that will power the future of mineral discovery.
About Us
Were a fast-moving, venture-backed startup redefining the way raw materials are sourced. With a mission to accelerate mineral exploration and reduce global supply chain bottlenecks, we're building robotic drilling platforms that deliver high-fidelity subsurface data with minimal human intervention. Our founding team brings deep experience across industrial automation, robotics, and field operations. Based in Southern California, we operate with urgency and clarity, focused on deploying real systems that solve real problems for both commercial and government partners.
Job Duties
Develop and deploy control systems that automate complex drilling operations, including material handling and sample retrieval
Design real-time interfaces with sensors and actuators to enable accurate, responsive motion control in remote field environments
Program and commission industrial automation platforms using PLCs and structured programming languages (e.g., ladder logic, state machines, structured text)
Implement robust safety protocols, including safety-rated software, lockout mechanisms, and emergency systems compliant with industry standards
Build and optimize human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and SCADA systems for remote control and diagnostics
Collaborate with mechanical, robotics, and embedded systems teams to ensure seamless integration of control hardware into complete product platforms
Perform rapid prototyping, hands-on testing, and iteration in both lab and rugged field environments
Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and upgrades of deployed systems around the world
Qualifications
5+ years of experience building and deploying industrial control systems in automation, robotics, or manufacturing
Strong working knowledge of at least one major PLC ecosystem (e.g., Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
Experience with servo drive systems, VFDs, and sensor-actuator integration
Familiarity with real-time fieldbus protocols such as EtherCAT, Profinet, or Ethernet/IP
Ability to interpret and design electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring for control systems in accordance with NEC, NFPA, or UL508A standards
Experience working in outdoor, industrial, or high-vibration environments
Strong troubleshooting skills and a hands-on, test-driven mindset
Preferred Experience
Background in robotics, mechatronics, or heavy equipment automation
Experience with SCADA development and modern HMI design
Exposure to safety PLCs, interlock systems, and fail-safe architectures
Prior work involving motion planning or real-time feedback loops for electromechanical systems
Ability to support onsite system integration and occasional international travel
Familiarity with mining, oilfield services, or field-deployed industrial systems (a plus, not required)
