Duties and Responsibilities
St. John Paul II High School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Guidance and Academic Counselor to join our team. The counselor will provide academic, college, career, and personal counseling to students in alignment with Catholic values. The ideal candidate will be a strong advocate for students’ success and well-being, collaborating with faculty, staff, and families to support each student’s development.
Ministerial Character:
The Diocesan Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church (“the Diocese”) entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as the Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Diocesan Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators, who are clerics, religious, and lay people. He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
Each position employed in the Diocese of Corpus Christi helps to extend the ministry of the Diocesan Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, this position is closely connected to and assists the Diocesan Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.
Key Responsibilities:

As an integral part of ministry for the Church, this position will support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both professional and personal life
Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
Continuously grow in the ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed
Provide academic counseling, including course selection, scheduling, and academic progress monitoring
Offer college and career counseling, assist with college applications, financial aid, and scholarships, and career exploration
Provide personal and social-emotional counseling in a manner consistent with Catholic teaching
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to address student needs and support academic achievement
Organize and deliver presentations, workshops, and parent education sessions on relevant topics
Maintain accurate records and documentation in compliance with school policies and confidentiality requirements
Uphold and promote the Catholic mission and values of the school in all interactions
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Texas Driver's License required
Must be at least 21 years of age
Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, or related field (Master’s preferred)
Valid counseling credential or certification (if required by state)
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in school counseling or related field (preferred)
Commitment to the Catholic faith and the mission of Catholic education
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and administration
Familiarity with the college admissions process and academic planning
Additional Requirements:
Must submit to required pre-employment screening including criminal history background check, motor vehicle check record check (MVR), and drug screening
Complete certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office of Safe Environment and Child and Family Resources
Requires adherence to all diocesan policies and procedures
Mental/Physical Demands:
Ability to carry, pull, push, lift, or move objects 10 pounds or more
Ability to maintain composure under duress; maintain emotional control under stress
Maintain confidentiality
