WHO YOU ARE

You will provide support for tasks and contribute to initiatives that help fulfil AGU's mission and strategic goals while gaining hands-on experience in editorial operations and publications promotion. You will be a proactive person who is organized and has strong time management skills.

This internship will be split 50:50 between two core functions of the Publications department. You will support peer review operations in AGU’s journals, processing submissions and working directly with stakeholders (authors, editors, reviewers, and other partners) to address submission and production-related issues. You will also support various initiatives with the Research Impact Team (RIT) that promote AGU publications and published content on different platforms.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Journal operations (50%)

Assist with tasks in GEMS (AGU journals’ submission and peer review platform) for assigned journals to ensure that submitted manuscripts are processed in accordance with journal expectations in terms of timeliness, ethical standards, and quality while maintaining strong, positive relationships with the editors, authors, and reviewers.

Provide support to editors, authors, and reviewers. This includes GEMS assistance, advice on procedures and policy, troubleshooting production and publication-related issues, assisting with the coordination of editorial board calls, etc.

Provide support during peak volume times, potentially managing other journals during these times.

Publications promotion (50%)

Support efforts to highlight recently published journal articles, books, special collections, and other publications activities in Eos, AGU’s science news magazine.

Develop graphics and text for social media to promote journals, books, special collections, and other publications' content.

Attend internal and external meetings with marketing and communications colleagues to help plan upcoming promotion activities.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

A bachelor’s degree, or a current student of a program, in geosciences, environmental sciences, or a related discipline, or in publishing, comparative literature, or a related discipline.

Ability to manage multiple complex projects.

Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Professional verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated attention to detail.

Professional customer service attitude, including responding to inquiries promptly

Professional interpersonal skills.

Ability to exercise discretion in confidential matters.

HIRING SPECIFICS

Pay is $17.50 per hour.

This is a full-time internship for 3 months in the Summer of 2025.

This is a remote internship approved for hire in several AGU-accepted US States.

We are not hiring in WA, OR, or CA at this time.
