Position Description

The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) Media Services is seeking a skilled and motivated Web Designer to join our dynamic team. The Web Designer will ensure the development and maintenance of the agency website content and the internal intranet to ensure cohesive functionality, navigation, accuracy of information, and performance. Regularly update and optimize website content, manage user access, and oversee URL management. This role contributes to enhancing our online presence and promoting transparency in public safety, effectively communicating with the public, media, and stakeholders through consistent, impactful, and engaging web design.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Website Development: Building and maintaining the Harris County Sheriff's Office website using programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Ensuring the website is user-friendly, responsive, and visually appealing.

Content Management: Creating and managing website content. This includes writing and editing text, uploading images and videos, and optimizing content for search engines.

Website Administration: Monitoring and maintaining website performance, managing domain names and hosting, and ensuring the website is secure and backed up regularly.

SEO and Analytics: Implementing search engine optimization strategies to improve website visibility and rankings, analyzing website traffic and user behavior using tools like Google Analytics to make informed decisions.

Website Updates and Upgrades: Keeping the website up-to-date by adding new features, improving usability and functionality, and resolving technical issues or bugs.

Collaborating with cross-functional teams like marketing, graphic design, and IT to ensure the website aligns with the organization's goals and brand standards.

Responsible for ensuring the website is optimized for mobile devices and has a responsive design that adapts to different screen sizes.

The Web Designer may be responsible for tasks such as testing the website's performance on mobile devices, improving navigation, and implementing mobile-specific features and functionalities.

The Web Designer is responsible for ensuring that the website functions smoothly and provides a satisfactory experience for users, regardless of the devices they use.

User Support: Providing technical support to website users and addressing any issues or inquiries they may have.

Integrating social media platforms with the website, creating and sharing content.

Perform other assignments and duties as required and necessary.

Requirements

Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Web Design, Communications, Digital Marketing, or a related field

Five (5) years of experience as a Web Designer, or similar.

An equivalent combination of education and experience in visual communications may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis

Proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.

Must possess a valid Class C Driver's License and auto liability insurance.

Must be energetic, creative, and deadline-oriented.

Knowledge of:

Content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal.

Web security best practices ensure the website is protected against potential threats.

Skilled in:

Must be highly proficient in the English language, both verbally and in writing; strong proofreading and editing skills with an eye for detail.

Strong project and time management/organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) principles and best practices.

Familiarity with website analytics tools like Google Analytics and the ability to interpret and analyze data.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills to effectively troubleshoot website issues.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams and website users.

Preferences

Bilingual – Spanish

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Design, Communications, Digital Marketing, or a related field

Knowledge of Microsoft IIS

Knowledge of LAMPS (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL, or other Linux variants)

General Information

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

This role is sedentary, however, the ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds is necessary to lift files and/or boxes of files, documents, etc.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department.
