Position Qualifications

The ideal candidate, at minimum, must have the following\:

Alternative 1\:

60 mos. combined work experience in any combination of the following\: conducting performance tuning and configuration, creating data models and providing technical Tier II database support including 12 mos. work experience in the primary technology specified by the agency in the position description & job posting.

Alternative 2\:

Completion of associate core program in computer science or information systems AND

42 mos. combined work experience in any combination of the following\: conducting performance tuning and configuration, creating data models and providing technical Tier II database support including 12 mos. work experience in the primary technology specified by the agency in the position description & job posting.

Alternative 3\:

Completion of undergraduate core program in computer science or information systems AND

What you’ll do at OhioMHAS:

OhioMHAS Information Services is the technology arm of the third largest cabinet level agency in the state of Ohio. We develop and support technology for several critical business solutions used by the agency as well as by county and local behavioral health care providers across the state. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Database Administration Specialist 2, primary technology SQL Server, to join our IT team. This position is responsible for advanced-level database management, including performance tuning, data modeling, business intelligence support, disaster recovery, and technical mentorship.

The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of database systems and be capable of collaborating across teams to support scalable, secure, and efficient data environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Database Performance & Configuration\: Tune DBMS systems running on a single platform for optimal performance. Perform load testing and ensure scalability of database systems. Provide Tier II database support for issue resolution. Design and maintain data models and create entity relationship diagrams (ERDs). Conduct data normalization and write platform-specific code for data migrations. Monitor load balance and tune cluster parameters to maintain high availability and performance. Participate in the Change Review Board to assess and implement changes. Troubleshoot and resolve database performance and configuration issues.

Business Intelligence & Data Warehousing: Monitor and tune data warehousing processes and business intelligence performance. Support business intelligence activities and data analytics processes. Design and implement disaster recovery plans, including restoration of malicious deletions and system recovery. Manage data archiving, backup, and restore processes.

Technology Research & Standards Development\: Stay current with emerging technologies and research enhancements that align with business needs. Conduct proofs of concept and develop business cases for adopting new database technologies. Develop, document, and implement standards and best practices for installation, monitoring, security, configuration, and migration.

Business Analysis & Client Collaboration\: Collaborate with clients, business analysts, system programmers, and application developers to resolve data flow and content issues. Translate business requirements into effective, platform-specific database solutions. Develop database strategies to support evolving business goals. Participate in project planning using best practices in database design and administration. Provide informal mentorship to peers and junior staff through documentation, conversation, or technical guidance.

This is an hourly position covered by the OCSEA/AFSCME bargaining unit (union), with a pay range of 35 on the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule. Normal working hours are 1st shift (8\:00am to 5\:00pm). This position is located within our Office of Information Technology, headquartered at the James Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 East Broad Street, 33rd floor, Columbus, Ohio 43215.

Unless required by any applicable union contract and/or requirements of the Ohio Revised Code, the selected candidate will begin at Step 1 of the pay range schedule listed above, with an opportunity for pay increase after six months of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
