We are building our core AI Weather Lab team to explore creative applications of AI methods to challenges in the renewable energy industry. To help us innovate and build industry-leading AI models, we are seeking an experienced

Machine Learning Scientist with a strong mathematical and research background in diffusion models, transformerbased models, or related areas.

As a key member of our research and development team, you will lead efforts to advance machine learning techniques to solve complex problems for renewable energy applications. You will work with senior scientists and engineers from a variety of fields in the lab to identify and prioritize research plans for AI-based tools targeting specific applications in renewable energy. Your expertise in research, cutting edge AI technologies and machine learning along with your creative problem-solving skills will be essential for the team as we tackle a diverse array of challenges in a rapidly changing landscape. RWE is the third-largest producer of wind power in the world, so you will have a material impact on renewable energy production across the globe.

Responsibilities:

Experiment, design, develop, and implement novel neural network architectures

Collaborate with domain experts to ensure models meet the requirements of targeted applications

Collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers and machine learning engineers to integrate models into scalable pipelines

Stay abreast of the latest advancements in machine learning technologies and best practices

Develop reusable components, libraries, and frameworks to enable experimentation with different algorithms and to assess the performance and robustness of machine learning models

Contribute to research advances in the broader community via conference presentations, publications, open source code and/or blog posts

Contribute to a team culture where diverse viewpoints, backgrounds and expertise are welcomed

Your powerful skills

5+ years of relevant industry experience with a focus on machine learning research and application

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. Alternatively, a Master’s degree with significant industry experience

Deep understanding of neural network fundamentals, including transformer-based architectures (including but not limited to LLMs), foundation models, and reinforcement learning

Firm grasp on using PyTorch to design novel neural network layers, embeddings, and physics informed loss functions in large-scale models

Thorough understanding of PDEs, numerical methods, tensor calculus, linear algebra, nonlinear dynamics, applied statistics with a focus on Bayesian stats, skewed distributions, and tail end events

Experience with multi-modal datasets and models

Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP

Strong passion for innovation and keeping up-to-date with the latest research in AI methods

Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross -functional teams and contribute to a positive team climate

Advantageous, but not a must

Domain expertise in meteorology, climate science or the energy sector

Proficiency in Nvidia GPU frameworks (CUDA, cuDNN, TensorRT, NCCL) and HPC technologies

Publication record in AI conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, Gordon) and journals

Expertise working with large geospatial weather and climate datasets as well as the Pangeo stack

Experience using JAX/Tensorflow and generative AI

Experience in deploying machine learning models in production using containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
