Sprue Conveyor Operator – Northern Iron Machine
Location: St Paul MN
Pay: $22.40 per hour
Shift: 1st Shift 4:00 AM-2:30 PM Monday-Friday (OT When Required)
Position Summary:
The Iron Foundry Sprue Conveyor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and consistent operation of the sprue conveyor system used to transport, sort, and manage sprue and gating materials generated during the iron casting process. This role ensures smooth material handling to support production flow and recycling of metal components, while adhering to foundry safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate, monitor, and maintain the sprue conveyor system to ensure uninterrupted material handling of sprue, runners, and excess metal.
Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on conveyor components including belts, chains, motors, and gearboxes to ensure optimal performance.
Coordinate the removal, sorting, and transport of sprue material for recycling or re-melting in accordance with foundry protocols.
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime, reporting complex problems to maintenance or supervisory staff.
Ensure compliance with all plant safety regulations and procedures, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in high-temperature environments.
Maintain accurate records of material handling operations, downtime, and maintenance activities as required.
Assist with the cleaning and housekeeping of the conveyor system and surrounding work areas to maintain a safe and organized environment.
Collaborate with casting, melting, and maintenance teams to coordinate production schedules and material flow efficiently.Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training preferred.
Prior experience in a foundry or heavy industrial setting, particularly with conveyor systems, is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of material handling systems, basic mechanical maintenance, and foundry operations is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret work orders, safety guidelines, and maintenance manuals.
Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of standing
Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds, work in high-temperature and noisy environments, and stand or walk for extended periods.
Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification is a plus.
Working Conditions:
This position operates in an iron foundry environment involving exposure to high heat, molten metal, heavy equipment, and airborne particulates. Proper PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots with metatarsal guards, and Respirator is required at all times.
