HP095 Database Software Developer
We are seeking a Database Software Developer to support the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF.gsfc.nasa.gov) archive, located at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. SPDF is the non-solar heliophysics archive for NASA and related science mission data. To support the scientific community, it is vital that data flows reliably and understandably into and out of the SPDF. This position is responsible for the design, development, and operation of a database of the files in the archive as they are ingested and then used in the Coordinated Data Analysis Web (CDAWeb.gsfc.nasa.gov) data browsing system.
The SPDF team uses a variety of open-source tools, creative IT approaches, and powerful hardware to accomplish the mission. This position will be a crucial member of the team who enables critical services to run securely and efficiently. The candidate will work in a production and real-time processing environment that includes changing scientific and security requirements over time. The candidate must be physically able to come to the GSFC site to physically meet with the government and ADNET staff on a regular basis and therefore must reside within commuting distance.
Primary Responsibilities:
Work closely with SPDF staff to determine database requirements, design schema, create stored procedures and implement the associated web service APIs to this database.
Develop command line routines for populating the database when adding new science datasets and ingested data files.
Evaluate database performance and database usage for reporting statistics.
Set up and monitor database backup and recovery procedures.
Position Requirements:
US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with US residency for the past 3 consecutive years.
Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance (pass a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA).
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences, or equivalent work experience.
Demonstrated experience in the development, design, and maintenance of moderately complex databases in an operational environment.
At least three years’ experience working as a database developer on Linux servers.
SQL development experience.
Shell scripting in Linux environments.
Python software development experience.
Experience designing large relational databases.
Experience with data base query performance and benchmarking tools.
Proficiency in Git for version control and collaborative development.
Background in a scientific discipline and work experience in Python programming are highly desirable.
Ability to work independently and with a team.
Desired Skills:
PostgreSQL, or similar databases
Development of stored procedures
Development of Web services and/or applications
Online data visualization
Experience with Interactive Data Language (IDL) and Perl programming
Infrequent travel may be required and is expected to be less than 5% for the year
