Satellite Communications Engineer: Inmarsat/Viasat Implementation

Overview:

We are seeking highly skilled Satellite Communications Engineers to support the deployment and integration of a state-of-the-art Ku-Band VSAT network. The network will provide secure voice, data, and video communications for major naval vessels and ground-based command infrastructure via Inmarsat/Viasat technologies.

This role will focus on designing, installing, configuring, and maintaining a STAR-topology satellite network consisting of a central hub station and multiple mobile ship-borne stabilized antennas, supporting AES-256 encrypted communications.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and execute the installation and configuration of Ku-band VSAT systems for hub and shipborne platforms.

Configure and maintain satellite equipment including DVB-S2/S2X outbounds and MF-D-TDMA inbounds.

Integrate hardware crypto modules (AES-256) and ensure end-to-end encrypted communication.

Work with Inmarsat/Viasat solutions and manage satellite capacity provisioning and SLAs.

Ensure the system adheres to requirements such as frequency band flexibility (X, C, Ku, Ka), automatic uplink power control, and seamless failover (Geographic Redundancy).

Deploy and maintain Network Management Systems (NMS) to monitor performance, bandwidth usage, and link reliability.

Support both Layer 2 and Layer 3 configurations and implement advanced QoS, VLAN segmentation, multicast support, and protocol acceleration (TCP, HTTP, GRE tunnels).

Implement software compression solutions to enhance bandwidth efficiency.

Provide technical documentation, system validation, testing reports, and training to Navy IT staff.

Assist in procurement planning and evaluation of spare parts, system upgrades, and bandwidth licensing.

Troubleshoot system faults, degraded signals, and hardware failures both remotely and on-site.

Minimum Qualifications:

5+ years of hands-on experience in satellite communication systems (preferably with military, maritime, or defense clients).

Strong knowledge of Inmarsat and/or Viasat platforms, satellite networking topologies (e.g., STAR, Mesh), and stabilized marine VSAT systems.

Experience with DVB-S2X, MF-TDMA, SCPC return links, and advanced FEC/modulation schemes.

Proficiency in Linux-based systems for server, routing, and NMS environments.

Expertise in Layer 2/Layer 3 networking, VLAN tagging (802.1Q/Q-in-Q), IPSEC, NAT/DHCP/DNS, and dynamic routing protocols (OSPF, BGP).

Experience implementing encryption (AES-256), compression (ROHCv2), and acceleration (cRTP, TCP/HTTP).

Familiarity with satellite antenna systems (0.8m Ku-band stabilized antennas, Satellite-On-The-Move tech).

Ability to read, interpret, and implement detailed system architecture specs, RF plans, and network diagrams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Military or maritime communications experience.

Training in Inmarsat, Viasat, or equivalent satellite systems.

Knowledge of ITU-R regulations, spectrum licensing, and maritime SATCOM compliance.

Familiarity with failover systems and Geo-Redundant hub implementations.

Ability to speak or understand Sinhala or Tamil is a plus (not required).

Work Environment & Conditions:

Willingness to travel frequently to naval bases and aboard ships for system installation and troubleshooting.

Flexibility to work in both on-shore and off-shore environments under variable weather and operational conditions.

Ability to work on-call for mission-critical support during deployment phases.Company Description
