Description
The Academic Advisor will advise School of the Arts majors in departments assigned by the SOA Director of Student Services. The academic advisor will collaborate with faculty/staff at all levels in providing holistic and appreciative academic advising and positive student support for assigned SOA students.
Job Duties
Provides guidance to students regarding course selections and majors and minors offered, appropriate academic schedule, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and/or suspension, and graduation requirements.
Coordinates/works with the Office of the Registrar to ensure graduation lists and records are accurate.
Provides academic advisement within the context of academic policies and procedures.
Assists Director of Enrollment Management with coordination of all orientation sessions.
Monitors student performance and intervenes for those who are on academic warning or are underperforming.
Monitors student progress through the degree program and intervenes when necessary to assist students in correcting course.
Evaluates students and communicates referrals as appropriate to tutoring, more specialized counseling, Academic Success Center, Career Development, spiritual or mental health, disability resources or other campus services.
Assists in developing and maintaining retention programs to ensure acclimation and orientation to Samford University.
Interprets and provides rationale for academic policies, procedures, and curricular requirements.
Uses advising software (currently DegreeWorks) effectively to document advisees’ progress toward graduation. Maintains students' academic files.
Proactively contacts and is available for student advisees on a regular basis, including maintenance of office hours and use of scheduling software. Is prepared for extended hours during pre-registration advising. Contact may be on individual or group basis or be made by correspondence.
Assists with college recruitment, including participation in weekend Preview Days and open houses as well as college and departmental recruiting activities
Maintains an open line of communication with faculty, including regular consultation concerning academic major and departmental information as well as collaboration on and effective coordination of degree and major advising.
Coordinates with advisors in other schools to share curricular information and opportunities for collaboration
Develops professional skills for role as academic advisor through ongoing training, including attendance at appropriate professional conferences and workshops
Other duties as given by the dean and/or director.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
Minimum three (3) years of experience in higher education, academic, or student services setting.
Fully committed to Samford University's Christian Mission.
Frequently remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
Frequently view a computer screen for up to 7 hours per day.
Occasionally move in an office setting to access filing cabinets, office machinery etc.
Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
Ability to work evenings/weekends as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in an Arts related major
