The hiring range for this position is $58,340 - $65,247. The full range for this position is $58,340 - $81,611.

The Highway Technician is responsible for completing non-routine work related to engineering design and construction work using technical knowledge of work areas. Responsibilities may include project inspection; interpreting construction and design plans; performing inspections of construction; acting as a liaison to the public; ensuring compliance; and creating drafts and maps using design and drafting software.

Job Duties

Generate and update maps, illustrations, plans, models, charts, and blueprints for infrastructure projects, including roadways, bridges, and water conveyance or retention systems.

Conduct inspections on active projects to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; monitor progress; approve payments; track materials inventory; authorize minor modifications to plans; and maintain accurate records of project activities.

Prepare, maintain, and distribute reports, correspondence, and related documentation to internal and external stakeholders to facilitate operations and ensure regulatory compliance.

Conduct and process surveys to support project operations and ensure accuracy and consistency of collected data.

Provide information and respond to inquiries from property owners and stakeholders; serve as a liaison to the public to support effective communication and engagement.

Perform additional operational duties such as hauling gravel and removing snow by operating and maintaining tandem trucks.

Qualifications

Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Civil Engineering or a related field preferred.

Equivalent combinations of relevant certifications, education, and/or experience will be considered.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

Engineering drafting and design terminology, methods, and practices.

Basic surveying and engineering principles.

Construction inspection procedures.

Geographic area and infrastructure of the jurisdiction.

Inventory management and standard office procedures.

Customer service principles.

Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines.

Basic budgeting practices.

Computer systems and relevant software applications (e.g., AutoCAD or similar design software).Skilled in:

Reading and interpreting construction and design drawings.

Performing mathematical and technical calculations.

Conducting field surveys and inspections.

Coordinating and evaluating construction projects.

Applying relevant laws and regulations to engineering tasks.

Using computers and engineering software to create technical documentation.

Providing effective customer service.

Communicating and interacting effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the public.

Learning and using design and drafting software as required.Certifications:

Ability to obtain highway construction certifications as required by the County. Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Ability to walk, stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods during field inspections.

Capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Visual acuity necessary to interpret plans, maps, and technical drawings.

Must be able to perform the essential physical duties of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.Additional Information

Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License and maintain a clean driving record.

Must pass a background check.

Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
