Position Summary
The Lead Estimator plays a pivotal role in the success of our projects, overseeing all aspects of preconstruction estimating and project setup. This position is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, performing accurate quantity take-offs, developing cost estimates, and leading the bidding process for commercial masonry projects. Beyond estimating, the Lead Estimator will help refine company systems by developing and maintaining estimating standards, performance metrics, and process improvements. Reporting directly to the President, this role will also contribute to scheduling, budgeting, risk analysis, and team leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the pricing and bidding of commercial masonry projects, from initial lead generation through proposal submission.
Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates based on project plans and specifications, including quantity take-offs and 3D modeling where applicable.
Engage with general contractors to clarify scope, materials, schedule requirements, and ensure accurate documentation of all communications.
Deliver professional, timely, and comprehensive project proposals.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve standardized estimating procedures and best practices.
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track project performance and overall company health.
Collaborate with internal project management and field teams to ensure clarity in scope and effective planning of field operations.
Conduct post-project analyses to evaluate material usage, labor productivity, and equipment utilization for ongoing database updates and estimating accuracy.
Maintain company backlog and projected labor schedules to ensure steady workflow
Build and maintain strong working relationships with vendors, clients, and internal team members.
Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes, safety regulations (including OSHA), and industry standards.
Maintain confidentiality and always uphold company values and professional standards.
Contribute proactively to continuous improvement of internal processes, budgeting, and strategic planning initiatives.
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field — or 5–10 years of relevant industry experience.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in the construction industry, preferably in commercial masonry or a related field.
Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and project schedules.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification preferred.
Proficient in construction take-off software and Bluebeam.
In-depth understanding of estimating methodologies and project management principles.
Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Occasionally required to climb ladders, navigate job sites, and work in active construction environments.
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Work Environment
This position is based at our headquarters in Lawrence, KS. Key expectations include:
Preparing and presenting weekly status reports to the President.
Participating in weekly progress and planning meetings.
Maintaining a thorough understanding of company systems, organization, and workflows.
Assisting in planning, budgeting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
