. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD
In support of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) in New Orleans, LA will perform a variety of duties to include but no limited to the following.
• Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well.
• Disassembles the RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions.
• Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO and high-level disinfecting reprocessors; may prepare operating room case carts daily utilizing surgery schedule.
• Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing.
• Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization, assembles basic sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room.
• Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME).
• Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center.
• Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes.
• May be required to prepare operating room case carts.
• Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• High School Diploma
• Graduate of an approved Sterile Processing Technician program desired
• Certification by IAHCSMM or CBSPD desired
• Minimum one (1) year of related experience
• Knowledge of equipment and instrument sterilization methods and procedures required.
• Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
• Relational and communications skills with ability to interact effectively with patients and staff.
• Must be capable of standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds)
• Must have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME)
• maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RME
• Ability to comply with safety, environmental, manufacturer and infection control practices.
• Minimum 1 years’ experience in ICU/CCU, Cath Lab/Bronch, Emergency Room, or Med/Surge
• Current BLS certification
• Current ACLS preferred
• Must be willing to work 8 or 12 hour shift
• Must be willing to work various shifts as required
• Ability to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills
• Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.
• Perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.
• Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10ft
• Must be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
