Position Description

Position Overview: Are you a visionary Design Engineer? Join Applied Medical and be at the forefront of revolutionizing medical device manufacturing. As part of our Automation team, you will be at our global U.S. headquarters, pioneering cutting-edge machines, collaborating across departments, and leading the way in cost reduction, optimizing manufacturing processes. As a Design Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting the development of automated machines or automated processes for our in-house medical device manufacturing. Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Expertise: Successfully apply mechanical engineering principles, including materials, mechanics, design for manufacturing, mechanical systems, components, and their integration. The Design Engineer will have experience in computer-aided design (CAD) software, and have the ability to design, update and modify fixtures, prototypes, and automated machinery consisting of a wide variety of electro-mechanical components including sensors, safety components, pneumatics, drive systems, etc. to the technical standards.

Problem-Solving: Identify and resolve technical issues during the design and manufacturing processes. Perform experiments to determine optimal equipment parameters, and evaluate machine feasibility using return on investment calculations, machine costs, prototype testing results, and other appropriate engineering tools such as 3D computer-aided design (CAD), risk analysis, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

Communication and Collaboration: Work in multidisciplinary teams to understand and translate each stakeholder’s requirements into technical specifications, and convey complex ideas to stakeholders. Interact with and provide support for various teams to ensure the project runs smoothly.

Documentation and Technical Writing: Draft design specifications, test plans, engineering reports, maintenance manuals, manufacturing and calibration instructions, and qualification protocols. Then, review the documentation to ensure that quality standards are met with both new and existing equipment.

Performance Objectives:

Within your first 30 days:

Complete all Applied Learning foundational courses with a passing grade of 95% or above, demonstrating rapid integration into company processes.

Participate in team meetings and operations, contributing valuable insights and ideas to at least three team discussions.

Familiarize yourself with Applied Medical’s operations and select processes.

Within 60 days:

Complete at least one project milestone ahead of schedule, showcasing a deep understanding of role processes and projects.

Participate in and make contributions to a group project, demonstrating initiative and team collaboration.

Within 90 days to one year:

Develop interpersonal connections and relationships with others to effectively accomplish project objectives and deliverables.

Lead at least two moderate projects with moderate guidance or direction.

Manage a variety of projects on your own with little to no-guidance.

Position Requirements

Understand and follow Applied Manufacturing’s Quality Systems (QS) per training.

Understand and comply with safety rules and Company policies.

Bachlor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field.

Experience with designing and upgrading automated equipment, working in a team environment, and working on multiple projects at once.

Knowledge of machining and assembly tools, equipment, and techniques.

Experience with a solid-molding computer-aided design (CAD) software package such as SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, or Pro/ENGINEER.

Strong communication skills.

Knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic devices commonly used in automated equipment.

The ability to occasionally work in a clean room and lab environment.

Preferred

Minimum one year of experience designing and testing electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems.

Experience designing industrial or manufacturing automated systems.

Experience using machining and assembly tools and techniques.

Experience with SOLIDWORKS, Product Data Management (PDM), Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing (SAP), and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).

Ability to work directly with vendors to specify, source and integrate machine components.

Experience with getting project definition from customers and meeting their needs.

Working knowledge of industrial pneumatics and sensors.

A strong analytical ability capable of understanding complex systems with multiple variables.

Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack up, and manufacturing processes for precision machined parts.
