The Advanced Polymer Technologies business is the market leader in Caprolactone and Polycaprolactone products globally. The business is geographically balanced. Our products go into a very diverse set of applications such as Polyurethane Materials, Adhesives & Sealants, Coatings, Polymer additives and Bioplastics that are used for end markets such as Industrial equipment, Automotive, Footwear, Consumer packaging, Electronic devices, Medical and Furniture. The performance characteristics of the Capa chemistry provides unique properties in our targeted end markets that allow both us and our customers to differentiate through innovative new products.

The job holder reports to the Lead Materials Scientist. This role will carry out the appropriate physical and thermal analysis testing of polymer materials in the Innovation Department in order to support new product development and application development know-how, and to respond to non-routine technical requests received from customers for analysis.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The following responsibilities are associated with this job role but are not limited to:

To prepare and analyse polymeric test samples in a diligent manner, within agreed timeframes, while ensuring all HSE, quality and turnaround time requirements are met.

Follow ISO, ASTM, BSI or equivalent test standards.

Use of the following materials testing equipment including tensile testing machine, impact testing machine, flex-fatigue tester, heat distortion temperature, DSC, DMA, abrasion testers and rheometers.

Maintain the lab area according to the 5S standard to ensure an efficient and effective workplace.

Maintain and initiate repairs of the equipment according to the maintenance database and treat the equipment according to the manuals and instructions.

Record all activities according to good documentation practices to comply with internal standards in paper and electronic lab notebooks.

Document all use of the relevant chemicals to comply with regulations on waste management including hazardous waste management.

To observe legislative, safety, and environmental requirements of the Warrington site.

Make equipment purchasing recommendations to line manager

Ability to make informed decisions related to experimental work undertaken

WORK ASSIGNMENTS

Safety

To work and behave in a safe manner, at all times.

To observe legislative, safety, housekeeping and environmental requirements of the Laboratory and wider Warrington site.

Aware and understand importance of the lab QMS and consequences of non-compliance to procedures

Comply to SOPs/WIs/Risk Assessments

Innovation

To carry out assigned materials testing and test development experimental work in the lab.

Compile experimental data and be able to carry out simple statistical calculations e.g. average, standard deviation, error etc.

Deliver agreed set of test/experimental data on-time with the amount of work that is expected with supervision.

To record information in lab notebooks / worksheets and other documents in accordance with procedures with close supervision from superior.

To protect confidentiality of information related to work within the company such that no unauthorized person can gain access.

To comply with company IT and legal policies

To ensure that all work carried out is recorded in the appropriate format and filed in the appropriate manner in order to ensure traceability.

Additional Duties

Maintain database of applicable testing standards and procedures.

Authority

To plan and execute work tasks as agreed with the Senor Materials Chemist on a day-to-day basis.

To procure laboratory supplies from suppliers as approved by the supervisor.

To maintain the housekeeping of laboratory workspace and cleanliness of any equipment used.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Formal qualification or relevant experience (2 – 3 years) in a materials testing environment is essential. BSc in materials science, polymer science, physics or related field required.

Experience in a commercial testing service laboratory would be advantageous.

Basic knowledge of polymeric materials especially plastics, polyurethanes, rubber and their properties.

Ability to use computer and approved software programmes such as Outlook, Word and Excel at basic level.

Ability to manage and utilise available resources such as equipment/tools, time and information to achieve work-related goals, with supervision.

Knowledge of testing and quality related questions.
