The Air Force Academy Athletics Corporation (AFAAC) is searching for a Financial Controller to oversee AFAAC’s financial reporting, recording-keeping and day-to-day accounting tasks. AFAAC is a 501(c)3 corporation directly involved in the operations of the Division I Athletic Department of the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO. This is a great opportunity to work in collegiate sports as the Controller and as a key member of the AFAAC leadership team. The Controller is responsible for ensuring that work completed by the accounting team is accurate and compliant with generally accepted accounting policies (GAAP) and 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards). The Controller reports directly to the AFAAC Chief Financial Officer. The Controller is expected to have a high level of initiative having a passion for process improvement and staff development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the operations of five accounting staff and lead the day-to-day financial operations of AFAAC.

Responsible for directing, training, and the supervision of the accounting staff.

Ensure the proper processing of all financial transactions using a system of controls to ensure compliance with the 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards).

Oversee and continuously improve month-end closing procedures.

Support and lead the implementation of technology that improves accounting processes.

Have a mindset of continuously improving processes, systems, and ways of working.

Serves as the primary point of contact for all AFAAC staff in relation to the ERP system.

Develop and maintain partnerships with department and company leaders.

Responsible for the customer, vendor, and employee records within the ERP system.

Expenditure approval as defined by policy limits, policy, and procedure recommendations.

Responsible for the reconciliations of financial activities.

In collaboration with the CFO, develops, writes, and updates policies and procedures recommending improvements as necessary and/or required by regulation changes from the Federal Government, State, NCAA, or best practices.

Ensure internal controls are followed and addressed with the appropriate personnel when weaknesses are identified.

Prepares monthly financial reports for sports and support units.

Prepares the financial and performance reports for Leadership and the Board of Directors.

Prepares financial and performance reports for Grants Officer and government grants team.

Trains AFAAC staff on existing and new accounting standards to include familiarity with company policies and

Qualifications

5 – 10 years’ experience as a Controller leading an accounting department or working a minimum of 5 years as an auditor of non-profit entities.

Experience in public accounting is preferred.

Well-versed in non-profit and fund accounting.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.

A CPA or master’s degree in business administration (M.B.A.) degree is required.

Deep understanding of internal control processes and segregation of duties.

Must be personable, a self-starter, organized, able to manage workload during heavy busy periods and ability to well with individuals that have strong personalities.

Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and ERP systems.

Experienced in accounting for government grants and ensuring compliance with 2 CFR 200 is desired.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a background check.
