Performs all activities in the receipt, booking, custody, transport and care of inmates in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assures the fair and reasonable treatment of inmates and the maintenance and operation of a safe, secure and sanitary corrections facility, placing a primary concern for the health, welfare, safety, and security of inmates, staff, and visitors.

Example of Duties

Receives and processes new inmates. Searches inmates; collects, records, and maintains inmate's personal articles; reviews commitment orders, books, fingerprints, photographs, and places inmates in cells.

Inputs and updates computer and manual files to complete incident, general, arrest, inmate, and statistical reports to ensure legal requirements are met.

Escorts or assures custody of inmates in transit to court appearances, hospitals or other medical facilities, or other correctional institutions.

Coordinates inmate control and distribution of necessary documents in the courtroom; calculates credit time for court sentencing as requested; verifies and updates court-related information on computer, such as final disposition, sentencing, and release dates.

Monitors electronic surveillance equipment and observes inmate, trustee, and visitor movement, programs, and activities within facility to control over-all security of and access to the facility.

Performs searches of inmates and facility for contraband.

Inspects jail facilities for security and cleanliness to assure facilities are maintained in accordance with established procedures.

Arranges for the release of inmates in accordance with established procedures. May assist in coordination of work release program, indoctrinating inmates into program, verifying places of employment, logging inmates in and out, and collecting and posting work release fees.

Prepares and submits written reports concerning inmate population and jail functions in accordance with established procedures.

Performs or ensures distribution of commissary items purchased by inmates such as candy, snacks, and toilet articles, and records payment on voucher.

Responds to inquiries, complaints, or requests for information regarding area of assignment from inmates, other staff and the general public, providing information within scope of knowledge and authority, or refers to appropriate individual.

Maintains current knowledge and skills in area of assignment by attending seminars and job-related training courses.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Valid Washington State driver license if driving a vehicle for County business.

A current state certification from the Washington State Law Enforcement Training Commission (CJTC), successfully completed the probationary period with your current or previous corrections employer, been employed as a full time Corrections Officer within the last 24 months and been continuously employed by your present or previous employer as a full time Corrections Officer for no less than 12 months and have no less than 18 months total Corrections Officer experience. Employment at Benton County is contingent upon the results of a background check and eligibility for coverage by the County's liability insurance carrier. Depending upon the position, background checks may include personal and professional references, medical examination, psychological and polygraph testing, social security verification, education and professional licensing verification, financial history, and criminal history.

False statements, material omissions, forgery, fraud, or dishonesty in any phase of the hiring process.

Ongoing pattern of fiscal irresponsibility

Any pattern of discrimination of harassment against any protected class

Current affiliations with any extremist groups as defined by the Criminal Justice Training Commission

Any other pattern of facts that would bar the applicant from certification as a corrections officer by the Criminal Justice Training Commission. Potential Disqualifiers

Driving

More than one DUI or related conviction

Multiple criminal traffic citations, or traffic infractions

Any juvenile felony conviction

Current accounts past due or in collections. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Able to complete the 10 week Criminal Justice Training Academy in Burien, WA or provide proof of prior completion.

Knowledge of or ability to learn the principles and techniques of modern inmate care, custody and control, and related aspects of law enforcement.

Ability to acquire skill in the use and care of firearms and the conditions under which they may be employed in accordance with department regulations.

Ability to physically handle and control inmates resisting detention.

Ability to maintain composure and self-control under adverse conditions, e.g., inmate harassment, ridicule, critical injuries, death.

Ability to hold self in readiness at all times to effectively respond to abnormal jail conditions and situations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Ability to perform duties and maintain personal conduct, attitude and appearance that conform to strict policies, procedures, and discipline.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
