After School Counselor

Summary of the Position Description:

The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is seeking Part Time Afterschool Counselors for Afterschool programs located in Jersey City, NJ. This is a great opportunity for those who care to instill positive values in children while teaching them new skills. All staff will be required to model the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in their work each day. The YMCA’s recruitment process includes comprehensive background check and upon hire, extensive training. Counselors are responsible for the supervision of groups of children within the program. The Counselor is an influential role model that directly impacts the children’s overall YMCA experience. The position is responsible for the planning and execution of the day-to-day activities of the program. The individual must ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants in the program by providing close supervision of all children and activities.

Minimum Requirements:

High school Diploma or equivalent required. College credits/ degree preferred.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Minimum of one-year relevant experience working with children in a group setting.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels including staff, parents, and school staff.

Ability to problem solve and make decisions that adhere to the purpose, mission, and goals of the YMCA

Must have strong organizational and planning skills and be detailed orientated.

Current CPR / First Aid / AED certifications a plus. Physical Demand: Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).

Schedule: Monday through Friday 2:30PM to 6:00pm. Some evenings for events and Saturdays for Training and special events.
