Description
Advancing Health Professionals (AHP): a Peace Corps Response program, is seeking a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Clinical Social Worker Advisor with Mother Patern College of Health Sciences (MPCHS) Stella Maris Polytechnic University in Liberia, without the provision of direct medical care to patients or clinical supervision of students. The position requires a master’s degree in social work, or clinical psychologist, psychiatrist or psychotherapist with three years of experience working in a clinical setting, experience teaching at a tertiary education level, and experience in supervision in clinical settings. Desired qualifications include experience working in low resource settings and PhD in Social Work or equivalent.
MPCHS develops and implements tertiary education programs that are unique in Liberia and fulfill emergent needs in the health care arena. The severe shortage of locally trained social workers to assist in meeting the primary mental health problems of the country -such as trauma, SGBV or drug abuse- requires innovative solutions to prepare a mid-level practitioner that is educationally and practically prepared to fill the gaps in mental health care. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the National Social Work Board of Liberia and the National Association of Social Workers of Liberia (NASWOL), as well as other local and international organizations, have in the past years acknowledged the importance of educating a qualified mental health workforce. Well, educated clinical social workers are qualified to adequately assess and intervene in a variety of mental health problems as there is a lack of practicing Psychotherapists and Psychiatrists to treat complex mental health conditions in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Currently, there is also a lack of available educators at MPCHS with the requisite knowledge and resources to supervise, coach and train students weekly on-site during their field-practice.
The PCRV will review and revise social work core courses, work with counterparts to develop guidelines and strategies to select and prepare preceptors for field practicum rotations, support the development of guidelines and policies for program operation, attend departmental and stakeholders’ meetings, teach assigned courses in the masters and bachelors in social work program. PCRVs are expected to report on their activities twice during their service.
Peace Corps Response established its "Advancing Health Professionals" program in 2019. Response Volunteers serving with the AHP program seek to improve health outcomes on a societal level by providing high-level, specialized service in the health sector. AHP projects include health professions educators, health systems strengthening, service delivery improvement, and other non-clinical interventions that enhance the quality of healthcare.
Invitees will be arriving in Liberia together as a group. While the whole group's departure dates could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
