The Massage Therapist is responsible for evaluating pediatric and select adult patients for massage therapy as a result of injury or disease; implementing massage therapy programs and services to meet the clinical needs of patients and families; providing education/in-services for family members, hospital staff, and community regarding the indications and benefits of massage therapy; documenting evaluation results and patient progress, and providing patient and family education. Demonstrates competence defined in Massage Therapy responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care and services to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and selected adult patients.

Responsibilities

Evaluates patients with varied ages and diagnoses to determine appropriateness of massage therapy services.

Establishes goals and develops an individualized treatment plan. Communicates status and collaborates with physicians, third-party payors, and relevant healthcare providers.

Administers massage therapy treatment to promote relaxation and improve pulmonary function, utilizes stress reduction techniques and other modalities, and observes and modifies treatment plans to meet needs and achieve goals.

Educates on treatment goals and therapy plans, instructs on massage therapy activities, documents instruction, and evaluates ongoing compliance and understanding.

Documents evaluation results, objective status, progress, treatment plan, and recommendations compliantly. Utilizes appropriate computerized or standardized documentation methods, as applicable to caseload.

Attends continuing education programs and participates in departmental in-service training programs, adheres to department productivity standards, and conducts massage therapy educational programs for hospital staff.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Completion of basic Curriculum for Therapeutic Massage from an accredited School of Massage Therapy.

2. Licensure by the State of Ohio Medical Board.

3. Certification in Neuromuscular and Myofascial Massage Therapy preferred.

4. Certification in Newborn Massage Therapy and/or Infant Massage preferred.

5. Previous massage therapy work experience in a hospital and/or pediatric setting preferred or clinical affiliation in the area of pediatrics.

6. Strong interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills required.
