Provides efficient assistance for the dentist and/or dental hygienist and individualized instruction and guidance to all Dental Clinic patients, i.e. infants, children, adolescents and selected adults. Demonstrates competence defined in Dental Assistant responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care and service to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and selected adults.

Responsibilities

Assesses and reviews patient's dental charts prior to clinic to attune to the history and anticipated needs of the scheduled patient.

*Assists in the physical preparation of patient, providing maximum comfort. Assists in explanation of routines and procedures to decrease or allay the patient's apprehensions.

*Assists dentist and/or dental hygienist with proper instruments and materials needed in providing care and treatment to patients.

*Takes, processes and mounts dental radiographs.

Maintains maximum aseptic techniques throughout each dental procedure according to Hospital and OSHA standards.

Assists dentists in the Operating Room and demonstrates knowledge of Operating Room procedures and techniques.

Assists dentists in the clinic with dental surgery performed under analgesia.

Assists dentists and/or orthodontist with instruments and appropriate materials needed for orthodontic procedures, and obtaining orthodontic diagnostic records.

Greets and escorts patients to the appropriate operative area, and assists in behavior management with patients.

Maintains neat and clean working area and restocks dental supplies.

Demonstrates knowledge of how to prepare for sterilization of all dental instruments and materials, according to established standards and procedures.

Anticipates possible emergency or crisis situations, directs and performs efficiently using sound judgment.

Participates in teaching, evaluating, and orienting dentists, dental residents, dental students, dental hygiene students, and new employees as prescribed by dental faculty and teaching program.

Maintains care of professional equipment and general supplies, reporting shortages to the Dental Clinic Supervisor.

Communicates with the Dental Supervisor and/or Director concerning activities of the clinic and patient care information.

Supports the Philosophy and Objectives, Policies and Procedures of Nationwide Children's Hospital, and assists in interpreting these to patients, parents, visitors and the community.

Participates in research activities as directed, and incorporates recommendations from research into patient care activities.

Provides patients with post-operative care instructions.

Takes dental impressions when needed.

Shares in improvement in quality of patient care through participation in team conferences, keeps abreast of new equipment, procedures and current trends in dental assisting by attending demonstrations, in-service programs and workshops.a. Attends all mandatory in services by hospital, ambulatory and dental clinic.b. Completes mandatory Learning Center in-service when due.c. Serves on hospital, ambulatory, dental clinic and/or clinic task forces.d. Completes CPR in-service if required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required

High school graduate.

Current license to practice dental radiography in State of Ohio.

Minimum of two years' experience as a chairside assistant.

Good communication skills.

Demonstrates ability to treat and teach healthy and medically compromised patients.

Possesses good manual dexterity.Able to monitor nitrous oxide and patient after analgesia is administered.
