About the role:

Sydney Airport is seeking an experienced Environment Manager to oversee and reduce environmental risks on major projects. This pivotal role ensures that environmental impacts are meticulously assessed, documented, and managed to align with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements. You’ll contribute to Sydney Airport’s commitment to responsible growth, balancing social and environmental needs.

* This is a 24-month fixed term opportunity.

What you’ll do:

Overall accountability to minimise SYD’s environmental risk on projects by ensuring environmental impacts and aspects are appropriately assessed, documented and managed to reflect corporate objectives, regulatory requirements and commitments within the Airport Environment Strategy

Management of specific projects critical to managing environmental risk at the airport. These include:

Advocacy for PFAS management works and focusing on transition from investigation to remediation activities.

Oversee PFAS foam transition and environmental controls improvements.

Ensure lease handback conditions for tenants are met, including investigation and remediation.

Collaborate with government organisations to reduce pollution from emergency relief structures.

Improve processes and strategies in partnership with business and regulatory bodies.

Support the advocacy for SYD’s position on environmental policies and regulatory settings.

Lead and contribute to projects that meet corporate objectives and legislative requirements.

Respond to environmental incidents and emergencies, providing on-call support as needed.

Communicate effectively with Sydney Airport management to ensure informed decision-making.

About the team:

The Environment Team, part of the Environment and Sustainability function, operates within Sydney Airport’s Government Relations, Sustainability, and Legal business unit. Led by the General Manager of Environment and Sustainability, the team drives the airport’s sustainability performance and ensures compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.

What experience you’ll bring:

Tertiary qualifications in environmental management, engineering, science, or a related field.

Proven experience in a senior environmental management role, with both generalist and specialist expertise.

Exceptional stakeholder management and cross-functional networking skills.

Beneficial experience includes:

Working with regulators and stakeholders on environmental matters.

Experience in capital-intensive industries such as aviation, infrastructure, or utilities.

Successful delivery of environmental projects.

Knowledge of state and Commonwealth legislation and environmental compliance.

Commercial mindset with the ability to balance tactical service delivery and strategic priorities.

Proficient in managing competing commitments in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and articulate complex concepts.

Strong project management skills to ensure timely and efficient delivery of projects.

Effective communication and consultation skills to manage and improve strained vendor relationships.

Ability to navigate and manage pushback from various stakeholders.
