What we are looking for

We are seeking an independent, forward-thinking Associate Engineer or Staff Engineer to assist with the workload of diverse, challenging solid waste projects in the Northeast and become a long-term asset based out of our Buffalo, New York office. Initially this individual will be expected to provide engineering support to the team within our existing solid waste practice focused primarily on landfill and landfill gas system permitting and design, solid waste facility (e.g., composting) permitting and design, construction, operation, monitoring, and air quality permitting and compliance support for private and municipal clients. The position includes opportunities for solid waste facility and environmental control system infrastructure permitting and design, engineering analysis, feasibility studies, report writing, construction oversight, field sampling and testing, and permitting.

The qualified individual may also support strategic emerging practice areas, such as wastewater treatment, organics management, alternative energy (solar and biogas), greenhouse gas (GHG) and sustainability, climate change and adaptation, PFAS and emerging contaminants, and carbon sequestration. As new work develops, you will be expected to manage and maintain contact with clients, and manage your schedule and work products consistently within SCS’s quality control standards.

This position may also provide support to our growing environmental services practice through such activities as the completion of Phase I site assessments, site investigations (including sampling of various media), data evaluation, document preparation, regulatory reporting, etc. Familiarity with New York and/or Pennsylvania environmental regulations and sampling protocols are a plus.

How you can make an impact

Prepare landfill and landfill gas system designs, including construction plans, specifications and construction documents.

Prepare air permit applications and compliance reports, greenhouse gas emission inventories, regulatory compliance calculations, permit applications for solid waste and industrial facility projects.

Prepare landfill-related engineering calculations to support reports and permit documents.

Prepare compost facility design and permitting documents, including evaluations and analyses.

Collect samples, attend meetings, site inspections, oversight of construction activities, source testing, etc.

Conduct and document construction quality assurance observations to confirm compliance with construction documents.

Complete quality control reviews on all work (reports, design plans, design calculations, data, etc.) prior to submission

Prepare computer models, review compliance issues, analyze data, and reports.

Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory personnel, as directed.

Client interaction and preparation of proposals on an as needed basis.

Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

Bachelors of Science degree (or higher) in Environmental, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, or related degree required.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation (or ability to obtain) preferred.

3 Months of research/internship experience in solid waste, landfill gas, air quality and/or relevant civil or environmental engineering.

High attention to detail with independent problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

MS Office software, with particular demonstrated skills in MS Excel, AutoCAD and/or GIS expertise.

Valid driver’s license with a driving record in good standing required.

Pay range for this position is $60k to $70k depending on experience. This does not include bonuses or our Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
