The Well is a Charity in Blind River Ontario, offering a Youth Center, Food Stability for the area, Community Events, and Programming for Children. We also have a Coffee Shop that functions as a fundraiser. We believe in building our community and offering new opportunities to children who have fewer opportunities, including a Summer Day Camp with Snacks, Games, Crafts, and Fun Bible Teaching. Our goal with our workers and volunteers is to create a community around purposeful giving. The position is Funded by the Youth Job Connect Program and will run for July and August. The Pay rate is $15.60 an hour, is 30 hours a week including weekends, and is pending approval through Employment Solutions (contact for details). Applicants must be between the ages 15-18 and return to school in the fall.
Job Overview:
We are looking for a Barista to prepare and serve hot and cold beverages, and food, including various types of coffee and tea, baked goods, and sandwiches. Barista responsibilities include educating customers on our drinks menu, making recommendations based on their preferences, up-selling special items, and taking orders. To be successful in this role, you should have customer service skills and knowledge of how brewing equipment operates. You should also be able to work various shifts. Note: This position also will involve supervising and helping out with the Youth Center. Ultimately, you’ll ensure an excellent drinking experience for our guests.
Responsibilities:
Greet customers as they enter
Give customers drink menus and answer their questions regarding ingredients
Take orders while paying attention to details (e.g. preferences of coffee blend, dairy, and sugar ratios)
Prepare beverages following the recipes
Serve beverages and prepared food, like cookies, pastries, and sandwiches
Receive and process payments (cash and credit cards)
Keep the bar area clean consistently
Maintain stock of clean mugs and plates
Check if brewing equipment operates properly and report any maintenance needs
Comply with health and safety regulations
Communicate customer feedback to managers and recommend new menu items
Maintain the cleanliness of The Well, including floors, windows, kitchen, bathroom, changing garbage, and the building in general
Wash and sanitize dishes and equipment as needed and at the end of the day.
Complete closing cleanup checklist: Sweep, mop, wipe surfaces, sanitize equipment, clean bathrooms, etc.
Assist with Youth Center as needed
Oversee hospitality aspects of events: prepare shopping lists, prepare food, set up food, serve food, etc.
Applicable Experience and Skills:
Previous work experience in fast food, or as a Barista or Waiter/Waitress
Hands-on experience with brewing equipment
Ability to read and speak English proficiently
Strong ability to multitask
Knowledge of sanitation regulations
Flexibility to work various shifts
Basic math skills
Ability to gauge customers’ preferences
Excellent communication skills
Relevant training is a plus (food safe handlers course, etc)
Ability to supervise students during youth center hours
