Description:

St. Andrew’s School seeks a full-time history teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. St. Andrew’s was founded in 1929 as an independent, Episcopal boarding school. The school educates about 315 students from around the world each year in an all-residential setting, and has a long-standing commitment to financial aid and socioeconomic diversity. Our students and faculty come from a wide range of backgrounds, traditions, and experiences, and it is this variety that creates a vibrant and challenging learning environment that makes our worlds larger.

The St. Andrew's History Department seeks a full-time instructor eager to embrace our philosophy of instruction. We believe in teaching and empowering students to do the authentic work of historians, focusing on the development of their historical thinking skills through primary source analysis. We are especially interested in candidates who have training and expertise in multiple areas of history, and are therefore able to teach our already established 9th grade American History course, and to design and teach new semester-long, upper-Form elective courses that broaden and deepen the offerings of the department. In applying to join this creative and collegial department, candidates should show a lively interest in pedagogy, collaboration, current historical scholarship, and professional development. As historians, we have a distinctive opportunity to guide students in engaging questions of equity and justice, making a demonstrated commitment to cultural competence particularly essential for any candidate. Candidates should have at least a B.A. in History (or a closely related field with significant coursework in history); a graduate degree and/or teaching experience is desirable but not necessary.

The position will also involve full participation in the extracurricular and student life programs of this residential community.

Responsibilities:

Four class sections;

Two seasons of athletic coaching or two seasons of a major, non-athletic extracurricular program;

Dormitory duty once or twice a week;

Weekend duty once every four weekends;

Participation in school committees and activities.

Job Requirements:

Interested candidates should have a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in history or a closely related field; teaching experience is beneficial but not required.

Candidates must have a passion for working with and living in community with adolescents.

Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or canceled, or disqualified from driving).

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with the experience to coach any of our sports programs will be given strong consideration in this search. We seek a head coach in volleyball, soccer, and/or crew. Currently, our assistant coach search includes crew, boys or girls squash, boys or girls tennis, football, boys or girls soccer, boys or girls lacrosse, field hockey, cross country, and wrestling but we are not limited to this. Candidates with these qualifications should highlight them in their application materials.

Conditions of Hire:

A thorough background check, inclusive of fingerprinting and Child Protection Registry check, is required as a condition of employment.

Applicant must complete satisfactory reference checks, confirmation of compliance with federal and state employment laws, and any other required condition of employment.

To Apply:

St. Andrew’s School is an equal-opportunity employer. We welcome diverse candidates of all backgrounds, faiths, and persuasions, and seek to foster an inclusive, welcoming community environment.
