Job Type: Full-time

Job Type: Full-timeCompany Description

Demko Orthodontics, which has had an office in Washington at 904 S. Jefferson St. since November 1976, is celebrating a 100-year family legacy in 2018. The Washington office was opened by Dr. Richard Demko after he returned from military service in 1976. Today it is headed by his daughter, Dr. Jackie Demko. She is the fourth generation of her family to work in dental arts since her great-grandfather, Earl John Poe Sr., opened a practice in the Paul Brown Building at Ninth and Olive streets in downtown St. Louis.

Born in 1894, Poe Sr. graduated SLU Dental School in 1918 at age 24. His son, Earl John Poe Jr., who was born in 1920, graduated from SLU Dental School in 1944. Between 1947 and ’49, he practiced dentistry in the U.S. Army during the Korean War at Fort Lewis, and he worked in the family practice until he died in 1987. His daughters Kathy and Nancy also worked there as dental assistants. Nancy is Dr J Demko's mother. So she got her dental genes from both sides of the family tree.

In 1968, Nancy Poe married Dr. Richard Demko, who went on to graduate from Indiana University Dental School in 1972 and SLU Orthodontics in 1974. He served in the U.S. Army from 1974 to ’76, receiving a medal for meritorious service, before establishing his orthodontics practice in Chesterfield and Washington. He also founded the Department of Dentistry at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield. Later he designed and taught SLU -CADE 1st Practice Management Curriculum.

Dr. Jackie Demko joined her father’s practice in 2000. Born in 1972, she graduated from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Ind., and UMKC Dental School in 1998. She earned an M.S.D. in Orthodontics from SLU in 2000 and worked alongside her father until his retirement in 2003.

Today Dr. Jackie Demko, who established the Code Smile Foundation 501c3 to help build self-esteem in children, specializes in quality orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedics for children and adults. The topic of her graduate thesis, which was centered around the Fibonacci Ratio and its application in facial beauty and harmony, was a feature in a 4 hour Special on TLC with John Cleese and Elizabeth Hurley, after graduation.

Dr. Mariel Cotton joined Demko Orthodontics in 2016. Her now-husband, had years prior, done a summer internship with Dr. J Demko when he began to contemplate our profession as a career path. They met and fell in love in Dental School and upon her completion of her orthodontic training, they came back to St Louis. Dr. Cotton & Dr. Demko found a sisterly Irish bond when they discovered they had both attended college in the small town of South Bend Indiana. Dr. Cotton at the University of Notre Dame. The two long haired brunettes both love the out doors and eating healthy as well as a passion for fur babies. Together they practice in our 3 current offices in Chesterfield, St. Charles, and Washington. They are the perfect blend of the tried and true as well as the current and cutting edge - both ladies valuing both tradion and tested as well as being open to a future of possibilities.
