Position: Fall Internship - Archaeology
Type: Academic Intern - this opportunity is open to ONLY those seeking academic credit for their experience
Schedule: Part-time, unpaid position from Monday, September 9, 2024- December 6, 2024
Must be available Tuesdays or Wednesday between 9am-4pm. Remote work times may be flexible.
Location: Archaeology Collections, Columbus, OH
Reports to: Archaeology Curator

About Ohio History Connection:
The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.
Summary:
This internship focuses on the steps necessary to properly curate collections under the archaeology staff's supervision. It will provide participants with an opportunity to experience various aspects of the curatorial process.
Essential Functions:
Develop a working inventory of the collections
Wash, weigh, number, and catalog collections
Collections research
Identify, organize, and assign object numbers to un-cataloged material
Data entry using Microsoft Excel
Required Education, Skills, Experience:
Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year)
Majors in Archaeology preferred
Experience with MS Excel helpful
Required Competencies:
Applicant expected to arrange for course credit through their academic The number of hours worked per week will depend on course credit hours.
Some knowledge of archaeology, especially of the Ohio area, is useful.
Must be at least 15 years of age of age to volunteer without a guardian
Must complete a background check and volunteer onboarding paperwork
Must create and account, log volunteer hours and sign up for volunteer shifts via Track It Forward
Must attend professional development and volunteer meetings, as needed
Desire to learn about history and share their knowledge.
Self-motivated.
Reliable and punctual.

Must present at the fall internship summit
Education and Experience Outcomes:
Experience in collections handling, processing, cataloging, and housing.
Knowledge of museum best practices and procedures.
Will learn about the history of Ohio
Will gain an understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit museum
Will learn to work within a team environment
