Job Title: Director, Decker Library

Department: Academic Services /Decker Library

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Vice President, Academic Affairs & Provost

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week; 12 months/year

Grade Level: 10

Salary Range: $91,400 - $118,700

General Purpose: To ensure that quality library services and collection materials are provided to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local communities, the Director is responsible for leading and managing all Decker Library’s operations, including strategic planning, goal setting, budgeting, formulating and implementing library policies, developing and evaluating services and programs, and collaborating on fundraising activities.

Summary of Essential Functions:

Leads strategic planning, goal setting, budgeting, formulating and implementing of library policies, development of services and programs, assessment, and advancement activities for the library.

Recruits and manages staff.

Participates in library liaison work including reference, collection development, instruction, and departmental outreach.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Oversees innovation and development in the areas of access services, collections and resources, management and infrastructure, and cooperative initiatives and outreach to enhance library effectiveness.

Directly manages full time staff to ensure performance of duties and professional development.

Develops and implements strategic initiatives to support the academic priorities of the college.

Develops and implements library policies and procedures to support the mission of the library.

Organizes opportunities designed to foster professional development and team building across library staff.

Negotiates, administers and manages library resource and service contracts to maintain performance of contracts and to properly allocate budget dollars.

Analyzes usage statistics to assess content and access for users and to maximize impact.

Determines fiscal requirements of the library operations, prepare budget recommendations, and monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds to properly allocate budget dollars and maximize impact.

Leads library assessment initiatives, including instruction assessment and regular program reviews to improve library effectiveness.

Prepares internal and external reports to support administrative, departmental and accreditation requirements and standards.

Collaborates with the appropriate technology office to ensure effective use of technology for the libraries.

Partners with departments/programs as a subject liaison including providing outreach and collection development for those assigned areas.

Performs instruction for liaison areas as well as a percentage of first-year instruction in accordance with the number of enrolled students in their liaison areas.

Develops activities, outreach tools, or programs that promote social justice, equity, and diversity.

Participates in library outreach activities on and off campus.

Provides reference and research consultation services through a variety of access points including email and in person.

Participates in campus-wide committees.

Actively cultivates new and maintains existing partnerships with appropriate academic and co-curricular departments on campus, organizations in Baltimore, and within the field of librarianship.

Contributes to the profession, whether through professional organizations or through other efforts. Activities may include work on a committee, task force, or other group; work on projects sponsored by professional organizations; or other professional efforts.

Engages in professional development through professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees, reading professional literature, and attending and participating in staff workshops and meetings.

Participates actively in resource-sharing consortia, including, but not limited to, AICAD (Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design) and MICUA (Maryland Independent College and University Association), to actively contribute to the effectiveness, advancement and professional relations of the library and the college.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Administrative library experience in an academic setting.

Experience managing staff and budgets.

General knowledge and experience in the area of art and design.

Knowledge of information resources, delivery models, vendors and software.

Familiarity with copyright law and its application in an education environment.

General knowledge of practices of functional library services areas.

Research skills in a dynamic electronic environment such as effective database searching techniques, strategies, and use of a variety of programs and digital research platforms.

Knowledge of the (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education and other important instruction information literacy practices and the assessment of them.

Public speaking skills to make effective and engaging presentations to diverse groups.

Work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively with colleagues, staff, faculty, and students fostering a collegial work environment that encourages growth, inclusivity, innovation, curiosity, and rigor.

Minimum qualifications:

ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced degree is required.

Experience managing library staff, collection development, budgets.

Experience in an academic library.

Subject knowledge in art, art history, or design.

Demonstrated experience with user instruction.

Exceptional communication, interpersonal, presentation, and teaching skills.

Exceptional organizational skills, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to set and keep deadlines.

Demonstrated experience with promoting social justice, equity, and diversity.

Preferred qualifications:

Academic background, coursework, or experience with instructional design concepts.

Demonstrated ability to effectively teach information literacy skills in a classroom setting.

Demonstrated liaison librarian experience.

Five years professional experience in an academic art library or senior role in library administration.

Condition of Employment:

Flexible schedule requires regular day and evening hours and occasional weekend hours, varying with academic calendar;
