The Structural Engineer – Commercial Wood Specialist is a critical member of an experienced team of engineers that serve as technical experts to consulting engineers, architects, building departments, contractors, and our sales team in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast US. The Commercial Wood Specialist engineer will support our connector, lateral-systems, fastener, and anchor products used in multi-story light-frame wood and heavy/mass timber construction. They are responsible for the development and delivery of technical presentations, creation of technical literature, generation of new product ideas and applications, and serve as the technical liaison to our multi-family project managers. Overnight travel will be required for some client visits, presentations, ride-alongs, meetings, and conferences. We are looking for an engineer that has the technical design experience to be an asset to our customers, enjoys collaborating with industry and professional organizations, and is a skilled problem solver.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

Establish and maintain relationships with structural engineers and large contractors involved in the design and construction of commercial light-frame wood and heavy/mass timber structures to earn the specification of Simpson products. Conduct technical presentations for both engineering firms and professional associations, focusing on both general technical knowledge as well as the advantages and benefits of Simpson products. (40%)

Provide technical product support to our customers as well as our internal team of commercial project managers, outside sales team, and industry specialists. (30%)

Develop specification tools, testing programs, design services, and market strategy to better support the commercial wood industry and increase the awareness and use of Simpson products. (20%)

Work closely with our regional engineering department to coordinate our efforts and collaborate on large projects and opportunities. (10%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Here are some additional qualifications and preferences for this position:

Bachelors of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering from a four-year college or university required.

Registered Civil Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.

M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.

5+ years of related structural consulting experience, including design with multi-story light-framed wood structures and heavy/mass timber.

Construction materials and design methods: practical working knowledge of common light-framed wood, mass timber, and concrete construction as well as associated design methodologies a must. Additional familiarity with masonry, steel (hot-rolled and CFS), and CLT construction and design methods a plus.

Product knowledge: general knowledge of Connectors and Lateral System product lines (Anchors, Fasteners, and CFS a plus). General understanding of product development process from idea to launch a plus.

Customer focus: quickly and effectively solve customer problems and maintain productive internal and external customer relationships. Readily adjust priorities to respond to pressing and changing customer needs. Recognize potentially adverse customer reactions and develop better alternatives.

Self-management: set priorities, goals and timelines to achieve maximum productivity. Manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner.

Communication: excellent communication skills; written and verbal, proof reading, professional phone demeanor. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Enthusiastic attitude and ability to work well with others.

Computer Skills: excellent proficiency in Microsoft software including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook and PowerPoint. Experience with AutoCAD, BlueBeam Revu, Simpson Strong-Tie software/apps, SAP, and Smartsheet a plus.

Teamwork: maintain a collaborative approach in dealing with other Simpson Strong-Tie employees. Demonstrate a genuine commitment to reach mutually beneficial solutions.

Accountability and dependability: arrive to work on time and follow instructions, policies, and procedures. Fulfill commitments made to customers, peers, co-workers, and managers. Hold self and others accountable for measurable, high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.

Reading and writing: ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

Reasoning: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagram form and deal with various items of abstract and/or concrete value.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, see, talk, and hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in both a professional office environment, customer sites and outdoor construction job sites. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/scanners, etc. The employee occasionally works around moving mechanical parts. Noise level may be loud at times.

Travel

This position requires domestic and international travel up to 25% of the time.

Work Status & Location

This full-time, exempt position is located in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Baltimore, MD, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, PA, and surrounding regions. This position is remote.

Relocation is available for this position.

Pay

$71,500.00 - $114,400.00 / year

* Posted pay range is based upon national average and may vary depending on geographical work location.
