Job Description

Company Overview:

Overair is a leading innovator in sustainable air transportation, dedicated to bringing next-generation electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft to the masses. Our flagship product, Butterfly, is an all-electric VTOL aircraft designed to revolutionize urban mobility. With over two decades of VTOL aircraft development, patented technology, and flight vehicle experience, Overair is committed to solving the challenges of sustainable air mobility.

Job Overview:

Overair is looking for a talented Sr. Thermal Engineer as we develop Butterfly into the preeminent eVTOL in the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market. The Sr. Thermal Engineer candidate would join the Propulsion Engineering team, responsible for designing, planning, and conducting R&D for existing and future products.

This is a hands-on engineering role, requiring both subject matter expertise as well as problem-solving skills. Qualified candidates will be adept at designing, planning, and developing processes for tests, as well as supporting ground and flight tests.

The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be comfortable with the design, development, and test life cycle of rapid aerospace R&D. To be successful in this role, you should have a collaborative nature and meticulous attention to detail. This role requires close collaboration with engineers from a breadth of teams as well as program management, so strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of thermal systems for eVTOL aircraft.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure effective thermal management of critical components such as batteries, motors, power electronics, and propulsion systems.

Conduct thermal simulations and analyses to predict and optimize temperature distributions, heat transfer, and thermal stresses.

Perform thermal testing and validation of components and systems to verify performance under real-world conditions.

Work closely with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and aerodynamics experts to integrate thermal solutions seamlessly into the overall aircraft design.

Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to source thermal management components and technologies.

Participate in design reviews, providing thermal expertise and recommendations to ensure designs meet performance requirements.

Document thermal design processes, simulations, and test results for future reference and knowledge sharing.

Contribute to project management activities by coordinating thermal engineering efforts, tracking progress, and adhering to project schedules.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field. A Master's or Ph.D. in Thermal Engineering or a relevant discipline is often preferred.

A minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in thermal engineering within the aerospace, aviation, or related industry.

Proven track record of designing and analyzing thermal systems for complex engineering projects, preferably including electric aircraft or aerospace systems.

Experience with thermal simulation tools such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or similar software to model heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and temperature distributions.

Proficiency in thermal analysis and heat transfer principles, including conduction, convection, and radiation.

Familiarity with thermal management technologies, such as cooling solutions, heat exchangers, thermal insulation, and phase change materials.

Knowledge of thermal regulations and standards relevant to aerospace applications.

Ability to use CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA) to collaborate on thermal design integration.

Strong problem-solving skills to identify and address thermal challenges effectively.

Ability to work within cross-functional teams and collaborate with engineers from various disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in eVTOL aircraft projects or electric propulsion systems.

Familiarity with battery thermal management systems, motors, and propulsion systems and their integration in aerospace applications.

Familiarity with FAA 14 CFR Part 91 regulations.

Experience with FAA airworthiness certifications and requirements (Part 23 and/or Part 27).

Familiarity with problem reporting and task tracking systems (e.g. JIRA).

Familiarity with requirements capture and tracking software (e.g JAMA).

Summary of Benefits:

Overair pays 100% of the premiums for Medical, Dental, and Vision for employees and dependents.

Flexible Spending Account with a company match of up to $1,000.

401(k) plan with a 6% company match, no vesting period, and immediate eligibility.

12 weeks of supplemental paid family leave.

Company-paid Life & AD&D Insurance.

Voluntary Life, Accident, Hospital Indemnity, and Critical Illness insurance.

Employee equity incentive program (stock options).

No cost Employee Assistance Program and Virtual Counseling.

Generous paid time off policy, including 4 weeks of vacation, 10 holidays, 6 sick days, and volunteer time.
