The Research Associate 1 participates in planning, designing, execution, and managing research projects occurring simultaneously investigating the molecular and cellular biology of cancer, specifically gastrointestinal cancers using in vitro and mouse models in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory in the Department of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (Dr Zobeida Cruz-Monserrate)
Designs and executes complex laboratory experiments
Participates in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies
Maintains mouse colony
Participates in the development and implementation of new and revised research methodologies and techniques
Tests experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilization
Assists in establishment of controls, criteria and research standards
Performs critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken
Performs basic and advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques including: PCR, tissue culture, DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, and processing tissue for immunotyping
Collects, analyzes and interprets research data
Maintains accurate, detailed records of experimental data and protocols
Conducts critical analysis of research literature related to research being investigated
Assists in the preparation of manuscripts, research paper, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for presentation at conferences and workshops
Assist in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents
Attends and presents at national and international scientific conferences, workshops and seminars
Assists principal investigator in the development and preparation of grant proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research
Participates in developing and managing grant budgets and grant project reports
Coordinates laboratory activities and work assignments of postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staff
Oversees and coordinates periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment
Monitors laboratory expenses
Ensures compliance with protocol requirements, as well as local, state and federal regulations
Monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance
Participates in oversight of daily laboratory operations
Trains and/or supervises other lab staff
Performs additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate biological / health science field, or equivalent experience required. Master's Degree preferred.
1-3 years of relevant experience required. 3-5 years of relevant experience preferred.
Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required.
Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.
Experience with animal models and managing a mouse colony is preferred.
