Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture, finger sticks and heel sticks on infants through adults while demonstrating age specific competency in phlebotomy technique. The Phlebotomist is required to function effectively with the laboratory information system, able to assist in monitoring system operation, investigate problems, and train other laboratory employees within scope of practice. The Phlebotomist is responsible for preparing specimens in the pre-analytical stage of laboratory testing for in-house and reference laboratory testing. The phlebotomist maintains his immediate areas of responsibility in accordance with hospital and laboratory OSHA safety rules and regulations. The Phlebotomist is responsible for filing and other clerical duties as necessary. The Phlebotomist is responsible for maintaining general inventories and reviewing general assurance. This position will be primarily working with the critically ill through rehabilitating adolescent to geriatric patient population in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional and/or developmental age of the individual served.

Major Responsibilities

Clinical – 75%

Performs venipuncture phlebotomy according to policy and procedure and OSHA regulations.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to extract an adequate and reliable blood specimen with the least amount of trauma to the patient.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills of “Age Specific Competency” relating to phlebotomy.

Performs fingerstick and heelstick phlebotomy according to policy and procedure and OSHA regulations.

Prepares specimens in the pre-analytical stage of testing for in-house and reference laboratory specimens accurately, consistently and with complete computer entry, documentation and follow through.

Strong knowledge of the laboratory information system and Order Management System, able to assist in monitoring system operations, investigate problems, and train other laboratory employees on the systems, within their scope of practice.

Observes the Hospital’s and the Laboratory’s general policies and procedures a described in the Administrative Manuel. These include, but not limited to, attendance, dress code, meal breaks, work schedule, telephone policy, patient confidentiality and overall professionalism

Adaptable to variances within laboratory day to day operations. Has the ability to organize and prioritize the daily workload to produce timely outcomes. Able to problem- solve situations that arise within their shift.

Clerical/Customer Service – 15%

Maintains department filing and performs clerical duties according to established procedure.

Performs clerical procedures and assist with the setting up of microbiology specimens competently under the direct supervision of a licensed technologist, without errors.

Miscellaneous/Other – 5%

Ensures adequate stock of supply within area of responsibility by performing an inventory at the start of shift. Communicates to supervisor whenever inventory is low.

Answer phones, fax results, process labels, process “send-out” specimens.

Maintain a good relationship with customers, staff and physicians.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

CPT license

High School diploma or equivalent

College training in basic sciences is preferred

BLS certification

Excellent written/verbal communication skills

Experience using Microsoft Office software at an intermediate level
