Come work for Lyon Shipyard! We are looking for a Crane Operator they must possess knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) sufficient to provide a full range of crane duties for a shipyard. The person should also be able to consider factors such as the size, shape and location of the object as well as the availability and strength of the overhead support structures. The position communicates with co-workers in all departments, and maintains a safe, organized and clean work environment

The Crane Operator performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving crane operation, crane safety, crane lift and maintenance. The Crane Operator operates heavy equipment necessary for the repair and maintenance of cranes; documents and records work performed; follows specified safety policies and procedures.

This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of an operator in the Crane shop.

Intermediate knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently, without assistance. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks.

The operator must demonstrate developing knowledge in the following key areas:

Crane Operation

Qualified to operate 2 or more electrically, hydraulic and manual powered cranes in a seated position

Qualified to operate at least one portable crane to include: G8, G7, G3, wing wall crane, diesel electric, diesel hydro, all electric

Understanding of cranes and functions

Crane & Lift Maintenance

Assist with maintenance of the cranes and lifts daily

Understand all lubrication

General Crane Housekeeping

Clean, grease and perform general housekeeping for the cranes

Crane Safety

Understand crane safety limits, devices and locations that make the cranes safe to use

Understand all procedures for fire, accident or injury prevention and response

Other Heavy Equipment

Must have knowledge to work with heavy equipment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

Knowledge of crane operation procedures and equipment

Use of Hydraulic mobile crane experience required

Conventional Crawler experience a plus

Must be able to calculate load weights according to crane manufacturer’s guidelines

High school degree or equivalent A operator must demonstrate developing knowledge of one or two mobile cranes and at least one portable crane, including the operation, function, capacity and care of the cranes per OSHA Standards.

Preferred Education or Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

Certified on a at least 1 portable crane to include: G8, G7, G3, wing wall crane, diesel electric, diesel hydro, all electric.

All required crane certifications are done through a third party, North American Crane Bureau (NACB).

Mechanics must be certified before operating crane. Re-certifications are required after three years on the portal crane and 5 years on the mobile crane per the NACB.
