Veterinary Nurse III

This position will actively interact and coach veterinary and veterinary technician students utilizing cutting edge teaching models, specimens, cadavers, and live animals.

Management of the teaching lab facilities as well as cooperative development and oversight of proper lab protocols is integral to the position.

Eligibility to be licensed Veterinary Nurse with the State of Michigan Supervision of personnel including work schedules, staff meetings, time sheets, performance reviews, planning and hiring Coach and assess students performing clinical skills using models, specimens, cadavers, and live patients Lead demonstrations to instruct groups of students May require teaching and interaction in virtual format should circumstances necessitate a class not being able to be on-site Requires continued development and maintenance of veterinary medicine and development of knowledge base Requires proficiency and continual refreshing of clinical skills; and research of any unfamiliar skills in order to become proficient Requires clinical skills in order to instruct and coach students in an engaged, hands on and positive manner Requires proficiency with animal handling skills of multiple species: including behavior and restraint, physical examination, and assessment of normal and abnormal conditions Requires proficiency of nursing care procedures: injections, vaccinations, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, fluid administration, ocular and otic exam techniques, urinary catheterization and cystocentesis, radiographic exams, FAST scan ultrasound technique, and monitoring patient assessment through use of all types of mechanical monitoring devices (blood pressure, ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography) Requires proficiency in preparation for surgery: aseptic technique skills such as assembly of sterile surgical pack; surgeon hand preparation, gowning and gloving; preparing patient with sterile drapes; and general conduct of personnel within operating room Requires proficiency in anesthesia: principles, drugs and drug protocols, equipment, machine troubleshooting, breathing systems, induction techniques, maintenance of anesthetic planes, troubleshooting patient anesthesia levels, recovery, reversal, and CPCR (cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation) technique Requires proficiency with surgical skills: knot tying, instrument handling, hemostasis techniques, suture selection, and suture patterns Requires daily practice routines: medical record tasks, clinical pathology procedures, biosecurity and waste management principles Acquisition of cadavers Thawing/freezing/disposal of cadavers Maintain cadaver logs Facilitates researcher and student club access and usage of cadavers Setup, staging and cleanup of laboratories for teaching and assessments Preparation, editing and update of CSL skills booklets Preparation of teaching and exam documents Staging of photographs needed for instructional or examination images and takes video as needed Helps to identify instructional materials in need of updating Maintains surgical instrument inventory and quality Assists with setup, usage, repair of teaching models Set and maintain weekly work schedules of team members, including nurses, veterinary assistants, on-call staff and students.

Cadaver resources: Seek out cadaver sources to establish supply Communicate with supply sources to establish supply Oversee and communicate with team for all cadaver matters Work with extracurricular student group representatives and outreach coordinators to schedule, supply items, or assign team members assistance to CVM campus group events.

Liaise within skills team and with Academic Programs (AP) and faculty: Liaise regarding year 3 lab schedules, needs and tasks Liaise regarding year 1 and 2 lab schedules, needs and tasks regarding lab details: scheduling, tasks, supplies, staff, live animals and cadavers, maintaining and updating templates Cross training within AP and CSL areas of responsibility Recruit new shelters and resources Oversee admission, physical health condition, and discharge surgery patients Facilitate VMC services when needed for surgery patient; script, imaging, hospitalization, billing Communicate pet health concerns, pre and post-op to faculty Coordinate with faculty and manage rechecks of patients Update shelter client regarding patient condition Assure accurate and on time physical set up of teaching labs Assure adequate disposable supplies inventory and quality Assure equipment is available and in working order Attend to and remedy complications that arise during teaching labs such as student injuries, animal injuries, sudden equipment failure Regulatory and Record keeping of compliance issues, ordering of supplies and equipment and medications Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in patient care, surgery, drug dosing and sterilization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year of date of employment; This job may require AALAS certification.

Desired Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology; experience working with livestock species (cattle, horses, small ruminants), experience in multi-species animal nursing and biological sample collection techniques; knowledge and experience in standard anesthesia and surgical room equipment and protocols; leadership training or significant experience in team leading; strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to interact well with a healthcare team within an academic environment; strong coaching skills and experience with students in a learning environment; ability to organize and oversee multiple projects, work independently, prioritize tasks, display initiative, and maintain a high attention to detail; significant experience with use of spreadsheet and word processing software.
