Job Title Dispatcher Department Public Safety - 50500 Pay Grade 7 Job Category Support Staff Job Summary

The Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for a part-time Dispatcher. The Dispatcher is a Department of Public Safety ( DPS ) employee who provides a vital link between DPS personnel and all other emergency and non-emergency services available to the university community. Dispatchers handle calls for service (via radio, telephone, police department lobby, and other electronic means) from throughout ETSU -owned and operated property, ensuring an appropriate response is dispatched in accordance with University policies and procedures.

The Public Safety Dispatcher also monitors and activates the mass notification system when severe weather or events occur. Dispatchers are responsible for maintaining the status of DPS personnel on shift or special assignment within the Computer Aided Dispatch ( CAD ) system. During university non-operating hours, the Dispatcher is the DPS communications representative for the university.

The position is regular part-time and the shift is for weekends only. Additional shifts or hours as staffing requirements demand.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the geographic area of campus.

Ability to follow the rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission pertaining to transmitting and receiving messages by shortwave.

Ability to operate a short-wave radio and receiving equipment.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine the proper course of action.

Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Ability to speak clearly with a well-modulated voice and professional manner.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.

Ability to operate a personal computer. Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High school diploma or GED . Other Requirements

Must be computer literate (basic knowledge and skills; familiarity and experience with computers and operating software systems).

Successful completion of the National Communications Institutes Basic Communications Officers Course after appointment to the position.

Must receive and maintain CPR certification and certification with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in query certification of the National Crime Information Center ( NCIC ).

Applicant must be:

at least 18 years of age.

a citizen of the United States.

must pass a criminal background check.

if a prior member of the armed forces must have an honorable or medical discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.

TCA 7-86-201 required taking and passing a medical physical, and a mental evaluation in accordance with the American Psychiatric Association. Preferred Qualifications

Valid Driver's License. Salary $16.36/hourly
