Department Overview

The OHSU Library, the largest health sciences library in Oregon, serves the faculty, staff, and students of OHSU, as well as health professionals and residents of the State of Oregon. Our mission is to advance the effective, efficient, and ethical use of information in support of education, research, and healthcare.

Function/Duties of Position

Working as part of a multi-functional and collaborative team, this position plans, promotes, provides, and evaluates information, education, and research services to OHSU faculty, staff and students, as well as health professionals and residents of the State of Oregon. The Health Sciences Education and Research Librarian cultivates relationships and builds partnerships to support learning, the delivery of health services, and research productivity by supporting and providing instruction in the effective searching, critical analysis, and management of health information, and use of library content and services. This position designs educational programs and curriculum delivered in one-on-one consultations, group settings, and courses. Additionally, this position engages with faculty, students, and staff to identify needs and assess the effectiveness of library services and instruction, serving as the primary contact librarian for several OHSU academic, research and clinical units. The Health Sciences Education and Research Librarian consults on and provides literature searches and develops and maintains the expert knowledge required for complex literature searches. This position works collaboratively with all OHSU Library team members to continuously improve learning and adoption of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across all facets of the organization.

As a member of the Library Faculty, the Health Sciences Education and Research Librarian participates in planning, policy formation, and decision-making relating to library services, collections, and technologies. In addition, this position requires service contributions to institutional, state, regional, and national organizations and initiatives, and participation in research, publication, and other professional and scholarly activities.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in library and information science or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience

Reference and information literacy instruction experience in an academic, research, or hospital library setting

Database searching and citation management skills and related service delivery experience

Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning in the work environment and for professional development

Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adapt to a changing environment

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive work environment that values diverse experiences and perspectives; demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with diverse students, faculty, and staff

Ability to build and sustain strong working relationships with colleagues and library stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated familiarity with biomedical and/or life sciences resources

Experience working with clinicians and clinical learners

Applied understanding of the critical appraisal and use of evidence to make clinical, research or other kinds of decision making

Experience with specialized knowledge and services, such as open educational resources, accessibility, universal design, or makerspaces and maker programs

Demonstrated service, scholarship or creative work, especially in librarianship, education, or the health sciences
