Overview
The Charter School of Wilmington is seeking a Secondary School Counselor for the 2024-2025 school year, who is excited to share our mission of engaging students in a world-class education that prepares them for college and beyond.
School Counselors at The Charter School of Wilmington play a vital role in supporting school outcomes and the strategic plan by providing academic, social and emotional support to students, families, and teachers to ensure all students receive the support and services they need to succeed and thrive. Secondly, the School Counselor will provide support to students and families to help them navigate post secondary plans (college admissions, vocational training, armed services, workforce). Lastly, one may oversee student award programs, help the registrar maintain student records, develop summary reports on students' standardized testing progress, and coordinate various testing programs.
Key Responsibilities
Provide school counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
Counsel small groups and individual students on academic planning, goal setting, managing emotions and applying interpersonal skills.
Consult with teachers, staff and parents/guardians regarding the developmental needs of students.
Coordinate, participate in or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school including Professional Development and alignment with State and Local standards
Consult with School Nurse and school-based Wellness Center to provide a social, emotional, and health wellness team for students
Refer students (as needed) to appropriate outside support services after consultation with their parents/guardians
Help students evaluate career and post-secondary interests and choices (oversee student's use of state Student Success Plan) & be active in coordinating any new future career exploration opportunities.
Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in developing education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation
Work to discover and develop special talents of students (i.e. HOBY, Governor's School of Excellence)
Provide advocacy for students regarding educational challenges/disabilities (504 Accommodation plans, IEPs) via Instructional Intervention Team (IIT/RTI).
Remain readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity
Work with students on an individual basis to determine appropriate resolution for personal challenges related to home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment
Guide students in their participation in school and community activities
Maintain student records/ transcript records and protect their confidentiality
Confer with parents/guardians whenever necessary
Serve as a consultant to teachers and other staff members, familiarizing them with the general range of services offered by the student services department
Consult with administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline when appropriate
Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents/guardians, and the community at large
Interpret the school counseling program to the community
Communicate and assist in employing the academic policy
Critical Experience and Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of adolescent development, special populations, special education, social and cultural bases of behavior, instructional design, and the organization and operation of schools
Knowledge of counseling skills, techniques, and programs - individual, group and classroom-based
Knowledge of classroom organization and management of behavior and able to work within the inclusive setting and specialized programs
Knowledge of federal/state laws, rules and regulations as they apply to schools and special education
Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes
Ability to work well with students, parents/guardians, and staff
Commitment and enthusiasm for working with a high-performing student population focused on implementing best practices related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Optimism, resilience, curiosity, and a strong passion for personal growth and student and teacher success
Education
Master's Degree in secondary school counseling or equivalent.
Certification Requirements
Hold or be eligible for Secondary School Counselor. Details can be found here.
Salary
Salary will be computed in accordance with the experience and training of the individual selected and in accordance with the salary schedules for employees of The Charter School of Wilmington. Direct deposit of payroll checks is mandatory for state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
Notes
A criminal background check, Delaware Child Protection Registry check, and tuberculin test are required. The candidate must demonstrate in the interview process an understanding of diversity issues as related to student achievement and the ability to apply the principles of multicultural education.
