Quanta Canada Renewables is a new entity within the Quanta family of companies, dedicated to providing the premier turnkey solutions for the full engineering and construction of utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects in Canada. POSITION OVERVIEW:
The CAD/Material Takeoff Technician plays a crucial role in our construction company, serving as a key link between project plans and successful execution. This individual is responsible for examining electronic plans received from clients, extracting relevant information, and completing accurate material takeoffs. The material takeoffs serve as essential documentation for the estimating and construction teams, enabling them to plan and execute projects efficiently. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a keen attention to detail, a solid understanding of construction activities, and preferably have experience with civil grading and electrical work, particularly in wind and solar energy projects. The position is located in Calgary, Alberta with remote location considered.
ESSENTIAL JOB SKILLS/DUTIES:
Receive electronic plans from clients and thoroughly examine them for construction details
Identify and understand project requirements and specifications
Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to extract accurate measurements and quantities for construction materials
Complete material takeoffs for estimating purposes and provide detailed reports to the estimation and construction teams
Possess a solid understanding of construction activities, with a focus on civil grading and electrical activities in wind and solar energy projects
Ensure precision and accuracy in material takeoffs to support the estimating and construction teams in making informed decisions
Work closely with project managers, estimators, and construction teams to understand project requirements and specifications
Proficient in the use of CAD software and other relevant tools for material takeoff activities
Maintain organized records of material takeoffs and related documentation
Generate comprehensive reports for estimation and construction teams, highlighting key details and quantities
Perform special projects and completes other duties as assigned or requested
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education:
Associate degree or Technical School Certificate in Electrical Design, Solar Design, Architectural/Engineering Drafting, or related degree or equivalent field; equivalent work experience, or combination of work and education, may be substituted
2-5 years of experience in the drafting/design of electrical power/distribution systems
Required Competencies:
Proven communication, organizational, documentation, and interpersonal skills
Ability to provide correspondence, both written and oral, to a diverse group of people including estimating and construction teams with tact and professionalism
Strong understanding of civil grading and electrical activities, preferably in wind and solar energy projects
Able compile data from site plans of various data sets (GIS, PDF, GoogleEarth)
Ability to take direction and work independently to meet deadlines
Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Knowledge/Skills:
Self-starter with the ability to work well independently, with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines
Effective problem evaluation/solving skills, generally inquisitive
Ability to interact effectively and professionally with other team members
Robust computer skills (Microsoft Office)
Strong organizational and time management skills
Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D and ArcGIS software and other relevant tools are a bonus
Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
