Standard BioTools is looking for motivated Staff System Integration Engineer who as a part of Research and Product Development team will play an essential role in development of commercial proteomic and genomic analysis systems. The successful candidate will work alongside the product design team to develop and implement integration efforts among mechanical, fluidic, electrical, software, and firmware components, solving problems that exist at the interfaces. The Staff level position will also manage a small team of Integration Engineers who are excellent, experienced problem solvers. As a member of the broader SSF-located Engineering Team, the Staff System Engineer will be working on a collection of initiatives focused on automation and/or miniaturization of biotechnology techniques utilizing all Standard BioTools technologies (microfluidics, mass cytometry, and molecular- and bio-technologies geared toward genomics and proteomics). SSF Engineering Team members interact with R&D staff around the world, including Markham, Ontario, Canada; Boulder, Colorado; and Singapore and, as such, some travel betwixt sites is expected.

Essential Duties:

Be the bridge between Software, Firmware, Electrical, and Mechanical elements and have a solid foundation in each discipline

Scripting capability (Python and C++)

Manage high value subsystem vendors

Manage Bill of Materials

Work with software engineers to build integrated test solutions

Work with design and sustaining engineers to develop and document test methods, test fixtures, and verification plans (specifically for design, service, and manufacturing transfer verification)

Work with sustaining engineers to develop system assembly work instructions

Responsible for creating FMEA/Risk Analysis during product development

Create accurate and complete documentation packages for both external vendors and internal customers

Accountable for small team of engineers responsible for:

System optimization

Reliability evaluations

Component analysis

MTBF/MTBR determination and verification

System troubleshooting, failure analysis, and recovery

Test method development and optimization; fixture design and deployment

Qualifications

BEng in Mechanical Engineering or similar with demonstrated experience (preferably 7+ years) in system Integration

Good working knowledge of complementary disciplines eg. optical, electrical, motion systems, pneumatic systems, microfluidics

Understands pro’s and con’s of mechanical tools and design methods; demonstrated grasp of DFM/DFX concepts and comfortable providing feedback to design team

Capable of recognizing components of varying type (e.g., mechanical, electronic, fluidic) and describing their utility with ease

Capable to tear down and rebuild instrumentation with ease; good spatial awareness and organization

Excellent working understanding of Solidworks PDM and its workflows

Demonstrated understanding and use of the scientific method

Understanding of regulated quality systems (e.g. ISO 13485) and applicable product safety standards

Excellent written and oral communication skills and a proven ability to work well on a multi-disciplinary team; explains complex information to others in straightforward manner

Experience in Lean environments and associated tools: Standard Work, A3 creation, Bowler generation, PDCA Problem Solving

Demonstrated ability to create assembly work instructions and

Good initiative and willingness to influence design decisions, critical thinker willing to challenge assumptions, self motivated and willing to learn, enjoys a faster paced environment and is open to critical feedback

Ability to work on-site at least 80% of working days

Ability to travel up to 10% (domestic and international) when necessary

Desirable Experience/Qualifications:

Design and build prototype electronic subsystems and test fixtures

Experience in Lean environments and associated tools: Standard Work, A3 creation, Bowler generation, PDCA Problem Solving

Experience with integration of consumable microfluidic devices in complex systems
