What is a Senior Engineer - Infrastructure responsible for?

Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for analysis, presentation, acquisition, detailed design, installation, configuration, implementation, modification of IT infrastructure solutions, performing performance trend analysis for planning of infrastructure capacity and improvements. They contribute to the development of new ideas and methods, working on problems/projects where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors. They exercise independent judgment within limited, defined policies and practices to determine the best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives, leading and/or providing expertise to functional project teams and may participate in cross-functional initiatives. They participate in process improvements, establishing policies, collaborating with other Engineers, Operations, Applications Development staff and vendors to design and implement solutions as well as developing and maintaining documentation for infrastructure planning, operational use and engineering support.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of Senior Engineer - Infrastructure?

As part of the Platform engineering, you will be part of the team that practices Infrastructure engineering practices in building and providing infrastructure and tools for technologies that fuel Franklin Templeton services. We are foundation on which products and technology built using public cloud, microservices, application development platforms etc. giving you the opportunity to scale from basic cloud services to complex cloud native applications, influencing and be part of bootstrapping development from concept to deployment.

Platform Engineer provides broad technical expertise and solutions that is focused on providing our partners with an experience to be envy of with highest quality services that “just works”. Our service scale globally, highly available, resilient with business continuity in at most focus. Works closely with application development, DevOps, CloudOps in designing, engineering, and running systems and establishing guidelines that aligns infrastructure with enterprise architecture standards and advance towards self-serviceable environment. Working closely with our application development groups to understand their information and data needs and partnering with DevOps, Architecture, Application Development, Testing and Operations, along with Cloud Architecture and Engineering teams to enable, while practicing and promoting reliability engineering principles through self-service and automation.

Key Responsibilities:

Strong knowledge of the Linux and Windows Operating systems, standard networking protocols, and components

Perform Linux system administration tasks and fix L3/L4 Linux operating system issues.

Build custom operating system images with tools such as Ansible, Puppet for hybrid cloud environments.

Apply secure-by-design principles to both on-premises and cloud architectures, incorporating best practices in software and system engineering.

Strong ownership, and collaboration demonstrated through communication.

Experience in designing, managing, and scaling systems in public, private, or hybrid cloud environment.

Acute drive to automate manual operations and to improve through iteration.

Manage all aspects of Operational Excellence, including Incident Management, Preventive Maintenance, Applying System Updates, Patching, Release Management, Capacity and License Planning.

Terraform/Puppet/Pulumi/Other Platform and Infrastructure as code systems is an added advantage.

Experience in Deploying, configuring, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting new and existing services, platforms, and application stacks.

Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with desire to fix things, lead by example.

Experience with scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning

Familiarity and proficiency with microservices architecture and container orchestration platforms (docker, Kubernetes)

The ideal self-driven candidate will possess strong communication, leadership, and versatile technical skills, along with a hunger for continuous learning, understanding and internal client engagement with a drive to meet Service level agreements, objectives and indicators (SLA, SLO, SLI).

Subject matter expert on how and when to utilize the automation tools, AIOps and ChatOps so solve complex operational and systemic issues to improve availability of services.

What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?

Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline

Minimum of 7 years of experience of progressive systems engineering and integration within agile focused organizations implementing complex solutions.

Expertise with systems administration and engineering across multiple platforms, cloud platforms and cloud services, Containerization Full stack Data processing solutions or services and Infrastructure as Code toolsets, Configuration toolsets

Experienced designing, developing, and testing complex solutions to support distributed, scalable, and highly available applications.

Core understanding of virtualization, private, hybrid and public cloud computing concepts

Progressive Systems engineering experience and In-Depth knowledge including the following with ability to build tools from scratch when needed:

5+ years of experience working with Unix Server environments.

Proficient administration skills in Dell EMC VMAX/PowerMax, NetApp, Cohesity, Brocade is an added advantage

Develop automation tools and scripts to streamline deployment and operational processes, ensuring efficiency and consistency.

Continuous integration and deployment methodologies and release engineering practices

Experience in building observability using protocols and tools that cover the space of log aggregation, analytics, telemetry monitoring and distributed systems tracing and alerting across application, infrastructure, and security monitoring tools

Scripting experience with Python, Shell and PowerShell.

Building and operationalizing data processing solutions and Databases with understanding including Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, Postgres and Cloud data bases solutions

Strong understanding of AIOps, ChatOps, tools, and Developer use of toolsets

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with users, management, technical and non-technical teams

Demonstrated experience and expertise influencing business decision-makers by reinforcing the value of solutions

Ability to quickly learn new and existing technologies with strong problem-solving skills.
