Position Focus:

Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Recruiting, the Assistant Director is involved in all aspects of the admissions process, including recruiting, file review, yielding, and operations. Responsibilities include the following:

Helps plan and coordinate the Law School’s recruitment calendar, including in-person visits and online events. Represents Yale Law School at recruiting events. Some travel to recruiting events will be required.

Assists with hiring, supervising, and supporting Admissions Office student workers and current students who are involved in Admissions Office activities.

Assists with outreach to student organizations and helps coordinate recruiting and yielding activities that involve student organizations.

Assists and helps coordinate all aspects of the admissions processes (including recruiting, admitting, yielding and reporting) that involve Slate. Serve as a Slate Captain for the Admissions team. Help manage projects that involve Slate and assist with using data from Slate to make strategic decisions.

Assists with automated and manual information exchanges between multiple admissions systems (e.g., Slate, ACES2, Unite, and Banner). Assist with statistical analyses of admissions data using a variety of reporting tools (e.g., Slate, Excel and Crystal Reports).

Assists in all aspects of preparing files for review, including completion of files and managing logistics of review processes.

Assists with developing and updating all admissions, recruiting, and yielding materials (e.g., applications, marketing materials, website content, portal content, materials provided to admitted students).

Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid, evaluates selected admissions applications (including file reading and interviews).

Helps to plan and execute in-person and online admitted students programming. Manages individual yielding events.

Engages in contact with prospective applicants, applicants, and admitted students and provides individual counseling and information as needed.

Coordinates admissions activities with other departments at the Law School.

Assists the admissions team with all operational activities as needed to ensure the smooth running of the office throughout the admissions cycle. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Evaluates all admissions applications, interviews prospective applicants, and independently assesses each application against a variety of factors, including the applicant’s strength, weaknesses and potential contribution to the Yale community. Determines applicant’s standing within local, national and international applicant pools. 2. Analyzes and independently assesses overall records to determine if applicants are appropriate for admissions committee review. 3. Presents applicant recommendations to admissions committee. Briefs admissions committee about applicants and about schools and geographical regions as they relate to evaluation of applicant files. Determines which applicants will be waitlisted. 4. Develops public presentations designed to promote Yale to prospective applicants. 5. Provides guidance and counseling to prospective students. 6. Coordinates alumni recruiting activities in assigned geographical areas. 7. Serves as a liaison with organizations and individuals involved in the admissions process. 8. Plans and drives recruiting and yield events and engages in corporate outreach with key industries and key partners. 9. Works collaboratively with colleagues within the school and across Yale, as well as other key constituents, to develop and implement strategies related to relevant geographical regions and professional industries. 10. Manages admissions efforts as they relate to a particular substantive area such as diversity, communications, recruiting, operations, and technology. Provides strategic vision as it relates to this area. Compiles key admissions data, analyzes trends and outcomes, and recommends new approaches and strategies. 11. May perform other duties assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and four years of experience in a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, challenging environment, working with diverse constituents (e.g. prospective and current students, faculty, and staff).

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to understand and promote the goals and distinct qualities of Yale Law School.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated skill in utilizing Slate (or a similar CRM database system) and other technologies, including spreadsheets, databases, and web pages.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

J.D. plus one year of experience in law-related position(s) OR Bachelor’s degree plus four years of experience in admissions, placement, student counseling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Exposure to law school admissions process through personal, volunteer, and/or professional experience strongly preferred.
