As part of The Foundling’s comprehensive services for youth in foster care in New York City and New York State, the Tutor ensures that each student is prepared to experience the most from their classes, develop effective study habits to help then now and as they advance in their academic endeavors, explore various majors and careers (as age applicable), and implement a long-term academic plan that will allow them to excel and achieve their full potential.

Responsibilities:

• Reports directly to the assigned supervisor or covering leadership.

• Support a caseload of 15-18 students across any subject where they need help. Conduct one-on-one

tutoring sessions every week (unless bi-weekly as part of academic plan).

• Meeting students 1x/week for 60-90 minutes in the student’s home or nearby in the community to provide

academic support and mentorship (virtually based on current context as per agency’s practice). Provide

tutoring sessions through both in person face to face and virtual online tutoring sessions.

• Engaging students during sessions and performing outreach in support of students who are facing barriers

to attend an engage

• Maintaining a regular schedule of tutoring sessions

• Promptly reporting non-tutoring-related concerns to the appropriate program and agency staff and

assisting with referrals to support services as needed

• Collaborating with students and families to obtain academic records needed for program evaluation

• Effective collaboration with partner agency stakeholders including case planners, education specialists,

coaches, etc. in order to keep them updated on student progress as well as working to remove any barriers

to academic success.

• Lesson planning and development of practice materials during time not spent in tutoring sessions

• Participating in training and self-study to ensure that their content knowledge remains effective, efficient

and up-to-date

• Participate in weekly coaching with supervisor to discuss student needs and identify areas for professional

development. Participating in group meetings and consultations as well as 1:1 coaching

• Liaises with stakeholders and assists students in integrating.

• Develop a success plan for each student that takes into account the student’s interests, strengths, and areas

of growth, and sets a clear path toward grade/degree completion within a reasonable amount of time;

regularly review and update this plan regularly as needed. Track each student’s academic progress and

troubleshoot academic issues.

• Submit feedback after each meeting with a student to track goals, successes, and challenges.

• Engage in group discussions to troubleshoot specific student issues and share methods for teaching

various types of content.

• Perform outreach to students to create a tutoring schedule and develop strategies to enhance their

engagement.

• Spend in-office time developing teaching materials such as worksheets with practice problems; study

guides and outlines of course materials; and methods for explaining important concepts.

• Adheres to program protocol’s and procedures and maintains clear, concise and accurate approved

documentation of efforts that promote peer and supervisory review and feedback, and that demonstrates

compliance with ACS, and meeting our agency’s expectation. Assures documentation (data entry) for

contacts, incidents, and reports are submitted timely (as indicated by program). Has ability to maintain

confidential client records.

• Available when students are available (including evenings and potentially one weekend day), and willing

to travel extensively and work with students in the home.

• Patient and positive; able to engage and build a collaborative relationship with students.

• Able to identify and reflect on what went well or improvements in a tutoring session and effectively

integrate new strategies and feedback into instruction + engagement strategies.

• Willingness to provide coverage support as needed to peers/team members

• Ability to travel outside of assigned borough/region based off of client needs.

• Respond to email correspondences in a timely manner.

• Regular and punctual time and attendance, and adherence to The Foundling’s and your department’s

specific time and attendance policies and protocol.

• Consistent demonstrated commitment to The Foundling’s BHAG, mission, vision and values

• Adherence to The Foundling’s employee policies, Code of Conduct and applicable rules, laws,

regulations or bargaining agreements.

• Appropriate engagement with support departments to ensure appropriate and timely hiring, performance

management, investigation, discipline, suspension, and restructuring decisions concerning direct reports.

• Any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned.

Salary Range: $51,000-$58,300/hr.

• Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Email, and Data entry systems.

• Able to deliver effective instruction across all core subjects.

• Compassionate and patient, and sensitive to the needs of our target population.

• Proficient in or able to quickly learn a wide range of academic subjects at multiple grade levels.

• Able to develop and tailor lessons that fit the particular strengths of each student.

• Capable of working in a group setting, and of giving and receiving critical feedback.

• Detail oriented, responsible, and punctual.

• Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred.

• Candidates who are bilingual in Spanish are particularly encouraged to apply.
