The Leader of Weekend Operations (LWO) is responsible for upholding corporate policy, procedure, direction, and culture while managing the performance of the Weekend Operations teams in all regions.

With oversight of Dispatch, Planning, Customer Service, LCV, Reefer, City, LTL, ABL, Intermodal and Customs, the primary focus will be to ensure that each department is meeting company goals in operational execution, customer service and driver satisfaction. This is accomplished through communication with leadership in all regions as well as developing a solid working relationship with department leadership. Excellent communication and a professional attitude are basic requirements.

The LWO will also play a critical role in redefining how Bison Weekend Operation operates. In this role the LWO will first assess the current state of weekend operations as it pertains to process, data, tools, and operational execution, then work alongside other business units to create a seamless flow from daytime operations into the night. The LWO will explore new ways to make our weekend operation more efficient and improve driver experience. The LWO will find ways to increase coverage across our network, identifying gaps in departmental coverage. The LWO will be tasked with assessing how new business initiatives will affect the weekend teams and provide feedback.

1) Leadership and People Development

a) Training

Involves the general and specific training of all new and current weekend operations staff. This includes: New staff as per the training schedule. Ongoing training for current staff as scenarios arise, or as they are identified.

Documentation of issues and action taken are imperative.

Participate in and promotion of cross functional and cross regional training for team members.

Focus on self-development including an annual Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Develop and maintain own RTM as well as those of assigned staff.

b) Staffing

Involves monitoring and identifying coverage and performance issues. This includes:

Interviewing and hiring of office employees.

Ongoing recorded evaluation of employees’ performance and providing information necessary to contribute to the employee’s performance evaluation, including work on existing areas of development and Smarter U courses.

Communicating employee performance to the employee.

Leading performance management initiatives for assigned staff.

Ensuring weekend schedules in all regions meet the needs of the operation.

Ramp up and scale down staffing levels based on business demand. (ties in with cross regional training).

Redeploy/assign staff to support other regions or departments as required.

2) Operations

Operations personnel in all regions look to this position for vision, direction, and support. It is a critical part of the leaders role to ensure that all employees needs are met. This involves direct and indirect leadership of dispatch, planning, customer service, LCV, Reefer, City, LTL, ABL, IM and customs business processes.

This will include working with other operations managers, supervisors and team leads to ensure the following:

Understanding workload and responsibilities of all weekend operations staff in all regions and managing performance expectations.

Work with the operations team to achieve regional goals.

Establish weekend specific metrics in addition to departmental ones to measure business performance on the weekend.

Identify process gaps and create solutions to move forward and address.

Provides escalation support for all regions.

Coaching staff as required.

3) Communication

Involves the monitoring of all incoming and outgoing communication to ensure effective and timely communication between operational business units, drivers and between regions.

This includes: Ensuring regular personnel are handling calls/messages/chats in a timely and effective manner. Personally handling calls/messages whenever a situation requires you to do so. Ensuring DIMS items are entered appropriately so fleet teams can follow-up in a timely manner. Continually work to improve both internal and external customer communication.

Consistent communication with daytime operations to evaluate and improve operations on both shifts.

Actively involved in new customer set-ups.

Actively involved in tracking and tracing for specific customers as needed.

Create and provide a daily forecast and recap (previous) to share out for all regions and department leaders required.

Provide weekly a Sr level summary of pervious weekends operations including Wins, Challenges, ongoing projects, etc.

4) Project Implementation

Involves participation in the setup of new initiatives and evaluation of how they affect the night teams as well as consistently looking at and instituting ways to improve Night Operations in all regions. Promote and support existing Bison project initiatives to ensure alignment for evening staff.

5) Travel

Periodically travel to each region to evaluate the performance of the region and team members, assist in the setup of new initiatives, develop best practices to ensure the tools are used effectively by night staff and to provide support for the operation as needed.

6) Other

Involves any other duties that may be assigned from time to time, on a daily or permanent basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills/Abilities and Qualifications:

Previous operations leadership leading day-to-day operations would be considered an asset.

Transportation industry would be considered an asset.

Desire and ability to lead and influence individuals from several business units and geographic locations.

Bison experience is an asset in areas including but not limited to, Operations, Logistics, and Intermodal.

Exceptional ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Superior interpersonal and communication skills.

Excellent team player, with strong attention to detail, and a keen sense of timelines.

Computer proficient, skilled at reviewing and organizing data to gain and provide insight.

Proven ability to apply continuous improvement principles and processes.

Shift Available: Friday - Monday.
