Your Mission

Blizzard Entertainment and the Hearthstone team are looking for a talented VFX artist to join our very capable team.

As a VFX Artist you will work alongside a highly creative team of artists, engineers, and designers to create visual effects that support gameplay in the fun and whimsical style that is synonymous with Hearthstone.

You will develop real time effects from concept to implementation, defining the vision while leveraging technical and creative skills to bring your effects to life. You will be asked to bring a set of skills to the table and will be allowed to develop new skills unique to Hearthstone. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp on Color, texture, shape, animation timing and anticipation, and most importantly, a passion for storytelling. You will apply these skills to progress and uphold the aesthetic of what makes Hearthstone visuals and gameplay so compelling.

This role is anticipated to be a hybrid work position, with some work on-site and some work-from-home. The potential home studio for this role is Irvine, CA.

What you bring to the table:

Priorities can often change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Develop high quality real time VFX for games in a lighthearted, charming, and playful style.

Apply fundamental visual design and animation principles to storytelling through VFX development.

Leverage a variety of tools for real time VFX creation including Adobe Creative Suite, Maya, Unity and in game FX systems.

Collaborate with design, applying your keen eye for lighting, value, color, details, and motion to deliver visuals that emphasize gameplay and delight our players.

Construct your VFX from the ground up with a stable technical foundation, including initial setup, implementation and troubleshooting of VFX in Unity.

Collaborate with engineers to create VFX in a performant and sustainable manner that allows for usability and a high-quality gameplay experience.

Demonstrate a high-level awareness of game design process, and ability to support design goals through visual brainstorming and concepts.

Bring a positive attitude paired with the ability to give and receive feedback that elevates the excellence of those around you and their work.

Minimum Requirements

Experience

Over 1+ year of experience, making real time visual effects in a professional capacity for games.

Knowledge & Skills

A firm grasp of the entire real time VFX pipeline from concept to final. implementation for stylized VFX and a portfolio or reel that demonstrates this ability.

Practical expertise of the Adobe Creative Suite, Maya or comparable 3D package, and Unity demonstrated in your work.

Highly creative and technically minded with the ability to provide solutions to design, creative and technical issues.

Knowledge and awareness of the game design process and how to support it from a VFX perspective.

Key Attributes

Self-motivated, well developed interpersonal skills, and a confirmed collaborative nature.

Excellent communication skills applied to receiving and delivering clear feedback.

Shipped AAA game title(s) as a VFX artist or equivalent educational and practical experience.

Experience with creating real-time VFX on a variety of platforms, including mobile.

Knowledge & Skills

Technical skills that encompass shader authoring, scripting, or working with visual scripting tools such as Playmaker or Blueprint.

In the U.S., the standard base pay range for this role is $29.81 - $55.14 Hourly. These values reflect the expected base pay range of new hires across all U.S. locations. Ultimately, your specific range and offer will be based on several factors, including relevant experience, performance, and work location. Your Talent Professional can share this role’s range details for your local geography during the hiring process. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
